I remember WAY BACK in the ‘90’s and early ‘00’s when municipalities in NY, NJ, and New England started reining in the plowing, sanding, and salting budgets.

Prior to this time, Yankees thought they could drive in snowy and icy conditions.

They could. So long as the plows and salt/sand trucks were out.

About this time I’d driven up-to Crawford Notch/Breton Woods in New Hampshire’s White Mountains to ice climb with a friend. We knew a blizzard was coming; we got in the day of climbing. I had to head south to Newburyport - about an hour north of Boston.

I made it. I drove 8-12-15 mph. I was passed by dozens/a few hundred vehicles……including plow trucks.

Aside from the plow trucks, I’d guess 100% of the vehicles that passed me ended up off the road.

All you can do in snowy/icy conditions is (A) not drive; (B) Drive SLOWLY.

It’s like rock or ice climbing….. physics always applies.

Growing up I never believed old people when they said their joints would ache before it rained or whatever. But I had stress fractures in my shins from running in high school… they’re long healed now that I’m in my mid/late-30s. But damn if they don’t still hurt when we get the first big temperature drop like this every year still.
