Easily the most informative image that I have seen so far regarding the storm:

I have no idea what they are even talking about there. You can't compute the weight of the ice without knowing how tall the tree is, or what type of tree. And since trees don't have leaves right now, that makes the image misleading (not sure if they tried to take that into account). I suppose it could be a pine tree, but 30 feet wide for a pine tree is really big, and anyway pine needles clump in the ice.

I love the .5 golden retrievers bit, as if any of this is remotely accurate enough for that level of precision.

And the strength of the trunk/branches is pretty key. After all, houses weigh more than that and don't collapse, because there's enough wood to hold them up.

It's from CBS Austin, and their trees still have leaves.

Speaking of, I have a silver maple out back next to the fence. I am expecting major branches to fall and take the fence out with it. Builder planted it and those have weak branches. That said I lost the tree out front after the remnants of two hurricanes came through and the silver maple hasn't dropped a single limb.

About 4 years ago I was going for my walk. I was going down a sidewalk in Williowbrook Park here in Burlington. It had been raining a lot and the soil was saturated. I had just passed a yellow maple when it fell with no warning. A young woman who saw it happen told me I had a guardian angel on my shoulder.

I once was driving outside New Haven, CT in a more rural area outside the city, I turned on a road and about 100 feet in front of me a tree just fell across the road. You just sit there and go "What the fuck?!" when things like that happen.

20+ years ago on a MetroNorth train in Westchester County, the engineer came hauling ass out of the little room in which he drove the train. The brakes engage before he came out.

Then, an 18-24” tree trunk came tearing through the front window of the train.

I know which tree you are talking about! I saw it right after it came down. That thing was huge!

Our last house had a Generac that I think got used a couple of times for any extended period — GREAT to have both times but two meaningful uses in 10 years felt wasteful. But right now I regret not getting one installed when we moved.
