Greg Fishel said in his latest update there is an 80% chance of a quarter inch of ice and only a 30% chance of half an inch or more. He said in no way will it be the worst ice storm we have ever had.
Was any rational person saying it would be the worst ice storm we have had? Maybe it's because I've been watching Ethan's forecasts all week but it seems to me to have remained pretty danged consistent that there would be significant icing and that Wake county would be about the dividing line of where that icing would be heavy enough to cause major power issues. Areas west of Wake County were where the icing was most likely to cause widespread issues.

Started raining softly and lightly about 9:45-10:00 pm in far SW Orange County. 20 degrees. A little ice forming on branches and what few leaves we have.

I had hoped the ultra-cold would dissipate whatever upper level warmth is melting it and let it fall as snow or sleet. I'm still hoping a significant amount falls as sleet or the storm runs out of moisture.

Charlotte area news has heavily implied that this storm will be the end of civilization as we know it and that we will be lucky to have either a functional society or electricity by Monday.

Very light here north of Charlotte so far — extremely thin layer of snow and I heard it sleet briefly at some point. My son reports it is snowing pretty heavily now in Boone.

It's not so bad yet. There's maybe a quarter of an inch of granular snow and ice in the yard and drive right now. It hasn't formed a solid sheet. My son just got back from driving his wife to the hospital for her work shift and made it there and back in about 45 minutes. That's about twice normal but he said he was being more cautious than he might have needed to be.

Didn't have enough light to really see how the pine trees are drooping but it didn't look bad.

ETA: I'm about a mile west of Carrboro Plaza, fwiw.

Garner town had what sounds like about the same as CH area -which is not always the case
Its a mix of freezing rain and tiny ice flakes Surpisied the accumulation is pretty minimal-road is white
Pines tree here have almost nothing-so I guess the little spourts all night were more sleet than rain

Hey, finesse,

Been meaning to ask…..what happened to that convenience store at Hatch Road. There for a long time; then abruptly closed and fenced in.
