What dumb responses by the evil dark overlord to his ignorant cult.

Kids (up to 20 somethings and beyond) become adults, much of the time. Not good ending up pawns or worse to Red China.

I would give Trump credit, if he was using the 75 day delay for some sort of negotiating tactic to benefit America. But I know Trump all too well. He is only in power to benefit himself and family financially. There's a reason all those billionaire tech moguls had front row seats at inauguration, including the Tik Tok guy. He will use it to benefit the Trump family bottom line, and more influence. Pay to play.

It was nice seeing failed real estate guy Kushner there as well with his $2 Billion Saudi real estate deal he got within a month of leaving office.

Damn that Biden crime family.

Depending on what is meant by "user," in the law's text, the US could own Oracle by the end of the month.

I fixed it. It is fine for the Red Chinese but not Chinese Americans. Still, the most harmless of all pejoratives. I mean who would be offended by be8ng called an Irishman, Germanman, Americanman, Swedish man, or Dutchman?

I know, it's all in how received by those directed towards. At least I didn't call him oriental like a rug.

Slurs have nothing to do with logic, they have to do with how the term was used historically. As a matter of logic, almost all slurs are harmless. But when a certain phraseology has a pejorative and demeaning connotation, then civilized people don't use the term. Logic or not.

Calheel, do you have any insight on why the fuck Oracle is hosting TikTok's service? Surely their GC can't be this stupid, can he?

Journey Of Course GIF

“… Apart from Musk, Trump said he would also welcome the possibility of having TikTok land in the hands of Oracle founder and chief technology officer Larry Ellison, who was in the room.

“I’d like Larry to buy it too,” Trump said, looking at Ellison. “I have the right to make a deal.”

Trump teased Ellison, urging him to start negotiating a potential bid for the platform before the reporters gathered in the room.
TikTok already has a deal with Oracle to store its US users’ data. …”

The EU will never greenlight Musk owning tiktok and twitter and they would force him to divest X if he buys tiktok.

Not sure how much influence has right now in his own caucus, though.

Are there any journalists writing right now about how what Trump and Oracle are doing with TikTok is absolutely illegal? We now know why Oracle is willing to take this risk — they’re all in on lucrative AI deals with the Trump White House. But is the entire media just willing to let them get away with blatantly violating the law on a daily basis?

Exclusive: White House in talks to have Oracle and U.S. investors take over TikTok

“… Under the deal now being negotiated by the White House, TikTok's China-based owner ByteDance would retain a minority stake in the company, but the app's algorithm, data collection and software updates will be overseen by Oracle, which already provides the foundation of TikTok's web infrastructure.

That would effectively mean American investors would own a majority stake in TikTok, but the terms of the deal could change and are still being hammered out.

"The goal is for Oracle to effectively monitor and provide oversight with what is going on with TikTok," said the person directly involved in the talks, who was not authorized to speak publicly about the deliberations. "ByteDance wouldn't completely go away, but it would minimize Chinese ownership."

… Other potential investors who are engaged in the talks include Microsoft.

… While estimates vary on how much TikTok's global business is worth, negotiators in the White House have said ByteDance believes it could fetch at least $200 billion, putting it well outside the reach of any of the consortium of investors who have been promoting their bids, according to the source involved in the discussions. …”

Yeah, that’s what prompted my post. In addition to being illegal, the corruption here is unbelievable. If Trump was fulfilling his constitutional duty to enforce federal law, Oracle would be on the brink of bankruptcy by now. WHY IS THIS NOT BEING REPORTED?????

Continued

“… Another person who has sat in on conversations with senior White House officials about a TikTok deal said appeasing Congress is seen as a key hurdle.

Under a law passed by Congress and upheldby the Supreme Court, TikTok must execute what is known as "qualified divestiture" from ByteDance in order to stay in business in the U.S. Trump is given wide latitude to interpret what that means, but experts say it could involve ByteDance retaining a minority stake in the company.

The app has passed its Jan. 19 deadline for achieving that splitting off from ByteDance, but President Trump has issued an executive order intended to provide a 75-day extension, though legal experts say the action cannot supersede the now-passed deadline set forth by Congress.

A congressional staffer involved in talks about TikTok's future, who was not authorized to speak publicly, said binding legal agreements from the White House ensuring ByteDance cannot covertly manipulate the app will prove critical in winning lawmakers' approval.

"A key part is showing there is no operational relationship with ByteDance, that they do not have control," the Congressional staffer said. "There needs to be no backdoors where China can potentially gain access."

… A national security plan that also involved Oracle, known as Project Texas — which gained momentum during the Biden administration — fell short of guaranteeing TikTok's independence from ByteDance, the staffer noted, but would not elaborate, saying it involves a security vulnerability that could have given China access to the data of American users.

The Project Texas proposal to eventually collapsed when Biden officials instead chose to get behind a congressional effort to force ByteDance to sell TikTok, or face a nationwide ban.

… China experts have said Beijing may be interested in approving a TikTok sale as a negotiating tactic to try to win tariff relief in the White House.

… Trump's executive order was enough for Oracle, and other web infrastructure companies, to restore TikTok's services. But other companies are not taking a gamble, including Apple and Google.

Under the TikTok ban law, supporting TikTok while it remains under the control of ByteDance can lead to hundreds of billions of dollars in fines, a punishment that can be levied a year after Trump's term.

"Oracle just has more confidence in Trump's political assurances," said Kreps at Brookings. "For Apple and Google, yes, they were invited to the inauguration last week, but where will things stand next week?" …”

——
I would put it a different way — Oracle has a long term profit interest in working with Trump to acquire controlling ownership of TikTok, so the potential fines are currently worth the risk. For now.

The end of the article touches on it. And Oracle hasn’t run up the back breaking fines yet — there must be a point at which they hit the pause button absent enforceable guarantees that they will not be fined …

Yeah I see that. Just seems like sane washing what doesn’t appear to me to be a close legal call. And I remain deeply concerned Trump is using this issue, relating to a ban on something generally popular with the public, to establish his ability to decline to enforce any law he doesn’t like.
