Trump administration plans big immigration enforcement operation in Chicago as soon as next week​

“… Chicago was among the first cities targetedin immigration enforcement operations when Trump took office in January. The administration also sued the city over its so-called sanctuary policies, though the case was dismissed when a judge ruled the federal government lacked the legal standing to bring the challenge, and threatened to withhold federal funding, which was also blocked by a judge.

Now, the anticipated operations in Chicago are expected to be at a larger scale, using personnel from Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Customs and Border Protection, and possibly other agencies. Officials are preparing the National Guard to help if a peacekeeping presence is needed, akin to what unfolded in Los Angeles following protests, the sources said.

Preparations for Chicago are already underway, including sending armored vehicles to the city in the coming days and surging federal agents by next Friday, Sept. 5, when, according to two sources, the operation is expected to kick off. Discussions, however, are still ongoing and planning is in flux.…”

Short version, they are planning large scale, intentionally provocative ICE actions intended to create protests as a pretext for sending in the national guard and military to quell the protests.
 
I wonder what the Chicago PD thinks about these untrained redneck ICE guys coming into their City ?

And yes, since you have doubled down on the assumptions, DC is entirely different from those places. It was intentionally designed to be. Where you see these patrols are not near commerce, shopping, etc. The patrols I see are near federal buildings, monuments, and tourist areas as well as Union Station which is a transportation hub. Nobody lives or really even works hotels near those places.

In other large cities, tourism and commerce are interspersed with with everyday life in a way that does not exist in DC.
 
I walked around multiple times of the day yesterday. Took bus early. No LEOs in sight. Came out for lunch and saw both NG and FBI. The NG were picking up trash. The FBI guys were standing talking to each other. Took metro home. Not a one on train, but did see NG at top of station.

Went back out last night around Dupont and around 14th. No one around at all. Never see any LEOs out at night since this started.

At least I'm at DCA now, a little Admiral's Club snacks before short 31 min flight home.

I read somewhere that one of the quiet relief valves of this federal intervention is that DC police have a long-term short staffing problem that has caused officers to have to serve a ton of overtime. This intervention has been used to try to restore normal officer rotations, giving the officers a break from overtime demands and the city some cost savings for not wracking up the overtime.

Yeah, DC is an extremely unique city. Can’t believe people would comment on it without knowing how it’s laid out, and how that impacts things like crime and safety.

That's not the case with Trump. He is literally the only actor here -- well, him and the well-known and not at all hidden military chain of command.

If you don't think Trump is doing a test run -- that is, if you disagree with virtually every scholar of authoritarianism in the country -- fine but it's not a fucking conspiracy theory (nor paranoid nor crazy) to think that he is.

Spoiler alert: IT DOES. DC was literally designed by a French architect in the Baroque style, with diagonals and circles, in order to create a majestic effect.

Those other cities grew organically, according to the logic of the market and the housing/office needs of its residents.

DC also has a limit on building height that none of those other cities have. There are literally no skyscrapers in DC.
