If I have this right, the events have so far proceeded like this:

MAGA folks take control of Georgia Election Board

In 2022, Republicans in the Georgia legislature pass an election law that removes the Secretary of State as chair of the Elections Board and replaces that role with a chair selected by the legislature.

Having seized control of the makeup of the Board, the legislature also empowers it to remove county election boards and replace them with an interim elections manager if they deem the local boards as in need of intervention. At no time may the State Election Board suspend more than four county or municipal elections managers.

In 2024, MAGA appointees are in firm control of the Elections Board and make a slew of last minute changes in process and demand to review the Fulton County 2020 reaults

In 2025, the Elections Board seeks Trump DoJ assistance in fighting Fulton County

In 2025 an apparently risible election fraud lawsuit is filed against Fulton county citing conspiracies about election fraud in 2025

DOJ uses that lawsuit as a basis to launch a criminal investigation and ultimately obtain a search warrant for Fulton County election data

Days after the warrant is obtained and executed in 2026, the lawsuit is tossed out of court by the judge for failure to even state a justiciable claim (and outcome that was apparently unsurprising and probably drove timing on the DOJ moving when it did to obtain a warrant)

The DOJ investigation provides sufficient pretext for the state election board to take control of Fulton county elections

Georgia has a heated GOP primary on March 17 for governor, pitting the Secretary of State who has defended the 2020 election against the Lt Governor who was a 2020 fake elector (among others)

Georgia has a key U.S. Senate race in 2026

Fulton county votes around 69% Dems in the 2022 off-year election, almost 73% Dems for POTUS in 2020 and 72% Dems for POTUS in 2024

Whatever else happens, the series of events seems pointed toward a state board takeover of the Fulton County elections board, perhaps even ahead of the primaries.
