Trump & GOP v. Pope Leo

Notice how this administration is suddenly so religious. They are seeing their grip on the Christian Right slipping. But why the attacks on Catholics? Could be because of a historical undercurrent of anti-Catholic sentiment among many/most Evangelical Protestants. These are the hardcore of MAGA. The Trump administration’s propaganda staff works all the angles. Stephen Miller and crew are hard at it.
Agree. I think we are seeing some of that in Mike Johnson's response. He strikes me as one of those uber conservatives who thinks Catholicism is the "where of Babylon" or some such nonsense. They prefer condemnation over love for those who dont fit into their absurdly narrow lane.

Their intellectual and spiritual ancestors.

The Know Nothing party, officially the American Party (and previously the Native American Party), was a prominent 1850s U.S. political movement driven by nativism, anti-Catholicism, and anti-immigration sentiment against German and Irish Catholic newcomers. Founded in 1844, it was nicknamed "Know Nothing" because members were instructed to say "I know nothing" when asked about their secret society. The party aimed to extend the naturalization period to 21 years and restrict immigration, peaking between 1854-1856 before dissolving in 1860

Of course, blacks, Jews, Chinese and Hispanic elements soon convinced their successors that race mattered most.

They are the Homer Stokes of 2026! "Brothers! Oh, brothers! We have all gathered here, to preserve our hallowed culture and heritage! We aim to pull evil up by the root, before it chokes out the flower of our culture and heritage! And our women, let's not forget those ladies, y'all. Looking to us for protection! From darkies, from Jews, from papists, and from all those smart-ass folks say we come descended from monkeys! That's not my culture and heritage! Is that your culture and heritage?"

The thing that always gets me about these nativist, anti-immigrant groups, especially those from the 20th and 21st Centuries, is that the white native-born people they claim to support and claim are "superior" to immigrants are all too often, to be blunt, lower-class white trash who are in no way paragons of white supremacy or native-born supremacy or anything else. Most immigrants are far more industrious, ambitious, and hard-working than they are, which I suspect is partly what frightens them so. If immigrants come into their town and compete with them for jobs they're probably going to lose, because they're often lazy, undisciplined, and not willing to work all that hard. Yes, there are exceptions, but it's all too often the truth.

“…
Before reciting the prayer, Hegseth explained its origins during the livestreamed service, adding that the prayer has become commonplace in the military setting.

"This prayer was recited by Sandy 1, to all Sandys, all those A‑10 crews, prior to all CSAR missions, but especially this CSAR mission that happened in real time," he said, referring to combat search‑and‑rescue operations.

"They call it CSAR 25:17, which I think is meant to reflect Ezekiel 25:17," Hegseth added before reading the prayer aloud.…”

anecdotal example :

An all white crew painted my house in Topsail Beach. They arrived around 9am took frequent smoke breaks, a 90 minute lunch, and went home at 4pm. They worked only a half a day on Fridays and not at all on the weekend and did a pretty mediocre job.

Flash forward a few years to me getting my house painted in Carrboro. It was an all Hispanic crew. They arrived at the house before dawn and waited in their vehicles until it became daylight and worked until dark with a 1/2 hour lunch. They worked on the weekends as well. They did an excellent job so much so that neighbors were asking me for the company's phone number.
