Trump & GOP v. Pope Leo

Overall that was a pretty depressing article. A few Catholics said that they were fed up with Trump and no longer supported him after his attacks on the Pope and the blasphemous AI image he posted of himself as Christ healing the sick, but most Catholics they interviewed were still sticking with him all the way- "he's doing so much good for the country", "he's better than the [Democratic] alternative", "he got us the Supreme Court justices that overturned Roe v. Wade", and on and on. They'll never abandon the guy - he really could just shoot someone in the head on Fifth Avenue and they'd excuse it somehow. They claim to love the Pope, but want him to do what Trump says - just shut up and stay out of US politics. There's a word for these people, and it ain't Christian.
You may know this, but Catholics in the US have a significant percentage of their number who aren't terribly different than Evangelicals...woefully ignorant of their own religion and heavily committed to social conservatism rather than the actual tenets of the religion they claim to follow.

Many of them aren't terribly pleased with the Pope and/or the Vatican over the last couple of popes and would certainly choose a conservative US politician over a "liberal" pope to support.

Those folks are going to follow Trump no matter what, they are amongst the folks that a civil society has no real chance of reaching. Where Trump will be hurt by going against the Pope is with a lot of more sincere Catholics who do not like the Dems over abortion and LGBTQ issues but will support the Pope over any US politician. A particular subgroup of that larger group is Hispanic Catholics who often have a lot more respect for the Papacy than your typical American Catholic and who see an attack on the Pope as an attack on the Catholic Church itself.

“… Now, fresh from a week in which he skirmished with the pope and Christians accused him of blasphemy, Mr. Trump will participate in a marathon reading of the entire Bible in Washington, the event’s organizers announced Friday. The event’s leader, a conservative activist who once ran for Congress in Texas, has described it as “a national reading of God’s law.”

The White House issued a statement on Friday praising the event, America Reads the Bible, as an occasion to “honor Holy Scripture, renew our faith, usher in a historic resurgence of religion on American shores, and rededicate the United States as one Nation under God.”

Mr. Trump recorded his segment of the reading from the Oval Office, organizers said. He read a passage from the Old Testament book of II Chronicles that has become a touchstone for many of his Christian supporters, who interpret it as a call to national repentance and subsequent blessing.

The central verse in II Chronicles 7 reads: “If My people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.”

“It’s been a hallmark of the religious right to cite this particular passage,” said Matthew D. Taylor, a visiting scholar at the Center on Faith and Justice at Georgetown University.…”

I think people underestimate how much Trump has been convinced by his religious sycophants that he has God on his side and how important that has become to his world view as he ages. His umbrage at the Pope may be in no small part arising from resection a majors religious figure challenging that.

I was pretty young when Waco happened, but I remember thinking even then the surprising thing is not that a few mentally deranged people hold themselves out as messiahs and organize cults. The amazing thing is how many people are willing to join. MAGA is the largest cult in American history, but the dynamic is no different.

I’m always amazed by that picture because the Bible didn’t spontaneously combust as Trump held it.
