UNCBAdookJD said it much better than me. It’s a contradiction in that they don’t want people to be able to tell them what to do with their bodies or their health care decisions, but they absolutely want to be able to tell everyone else what to do with their bodies and healthcare decisions.

Is that a contradiction? I think the GOP has been the party of governmental overreach for a long time. There are only a few places where they don’t like overreach - like taxes. They’ve been all about nosing into your business ever since they aligned with envangelicals - who are the nosiest of all groups.

Lots of similar sentiments were expressed in Weimar. And Hungary about a decade and a half ago. I'm not saying you're wrong, but it's more complicated than that.

Let's assume for a minute that it is certain they will trash the constitution and try to create an autocracy or purely electoral democracy (like Putin's Russia, where elections are in fact held, but they aren't free or fair). In that case, I would argue that we would have an obligation to trash the constitution ourselves, because then we will be the ones who can build it back into something like an 21st century update of what it was -- whereas they are going to build into white Christian nationalism. Yes, I'm aware that "we're the good guys" has been the mantle of any number of totalitarian movements (e.g. Maoism) and that's what makes all of this dangerous. But faced with a choice between a certain right-wing dictator and a possible left-wing one, I would go with the latter.

But you're right -- it's not inevitable. So what difference does that make? Hard to say. The consequences are still so potentially terrible that it's an unacceptable risk. On the other hand, the choice between a possible right-wing dictator and a possible left-wing dictator becomes less clear. To me, it's climate change that tips the scales here. The real danger of Trump isn't necessarily what he will do to America -- after all, at least some Americans will get what they chose -- but the consequences to the planet. Rolling back climate progress when in reality we need to be doubling our efforts will prove catastrophic and probably irreversible, absent the emergence of some fantastic technology.

Obviously my opinion carries no weight so it's idle chatter.

This may sound whacky (especially concerning what I speculated about the next four years in another thread, which probably made me sound like a conspiracy theorist - and I'm certainly not), but I have thought for several years now that Musk thinks he's Hugo Drax from Moonraker. I'm not stating he literally thinks he's Hugo Drax, but that he fancies himself in a similar light.

Whatever the case, he has become a veritable Bond villain.

I agree. At least once a week for the past several months now I have to pause and just think about how dumb it is that this is such an "issue" for so many Americans. I mean, it literally affects my life (and most of theirs as well) not one measurable bit.

Like transgender women in sports and bathrooms. I mean, who gives a shit! Other than apparently millions and millions of idiot Americans.

I drink milk and have since I was a child because my Mom insisted that as kids we drink milk with every meal (we finally talked her out of it for Italian food). But I wonder as an adult whether we should be drinking milk at all. And I would be sad to quit drinking milk, though I only drink skim milk and find whole milk undrinkable now. So I’m baffled by the raw milk movement.

To be perfectly clear, I am not anti vax in any sense of the word.

I was definitely anti mask mandate though. And I do support cleaner ingredients in our food (still can’t believe that one is controversial).

Yeah. I could not possibly care less one way or the other about fighting over what ingredients are in food. I am more than capable of making choices for my family and I of what we do and don’t eat, without thinking that I need to also be able to tell other people and their families what they can’t eat. It’s just incredibly funny how Republicans have all become desperate for the nanny state to step in and regulate literally every aspect of their lives. It’s even more amusing that Republicans have all of a sudden become enormous fans of a radical, far left wing lunatic all because he started tongue polishing Trump’s tip once the Biden and then the Harris campaigns told him to fuck off.

Cleaner ingredients isn't controversial per se, it's just the last time we tried it, you all pretty much rioted.
 
Hell, I am absolutely all for removing all traces of high fructose corn syrup from our foods and beverages and replacing them with pure cane sugar. But that would require Republicans to support removal of tariffs on imported sugar and eliminate subsidies to corn farmers, so of course it won’t happen.

I wouldn't say "odds are" until we can at least specify how the election would be cancelled. It's a real fear, given Trump's expressed desire to be a dictator and the cabinet selections which only make sense within that framework. But I would put better odds not on cancelling, but on trying to rig the elections through disinformation and scare tactics. They are going to turn the DOJ civil rights division into a means for suppressing civil rights.

Maybe if it all falls apart you're right. It's a possibility to keep in mind (as if we could ever let it get far) but I wouldn't say "odds are" just yet.
