I think the pressure to get Zelensky to sign an agreement for mineral rights on the spot was to have a verifiable starting point for negotiations to this effect. If Trump can say “Zelensky agreed to give us half” it’s easier to get Putin to acquiesce to a similar split. Of course, that would be a phenomenally bad deal (very own brand with Trump) with Russian occupation of the territory and no US forces anywhere nearby. What US company would invest in mining infrastructure in Putin-controlled land?I think the stunt to make an absurdist offer to Zelensky to turn over half of Ukraines rare earth minerals was a setup for a deal that is already being cut between the Trump administration and the Putin regime — Russia currently controls most of the Ukrainian territory with rare earth deposits. I think the deal being cut will be Russia keeps that territory if it divvies up those rare earth spoils with the USA.
