Keep in mind that, while Trump is threatening the world with tariffs, other countries are forging trade relations with each other. There's been a flurry of bilateral trade deals in the last year, and I'm sure there are more in the works.

Meanwhile, Trump has accomplished nothing but send interest rates soaring.

Several of us said that we don't like tariffs but Trump was simply using them as leverage in negotiations. Well, that's exactly what happened. They never went into effect and we have 30 days to negotiate an even better deal(s). We can disagree who got the better "deal" but the point is the tariffs were just the club.

Yeah, it's probably frustrating being an ally/neighbor of Trump's USA but we'll get their assist for securing both borders. See, you don't need a big "border deal" to secure the border. You can secure it simply using your Executive powers and foreign policy diplomacy.
Right on cue

It should also be noted that this "30 day pause" bullshit is the stupidest possible approach. It's like buying a 6 month CD over and over again.

Investment does not follow uncertainty. It flees uncertainty. Who would build a new factory in America now? There could be tariffs in a month, or three, or the debt might not get paid, or the incentives yanked or who knows.

Point is, there's no coherent policy. In a way, tariffs would be better than these quasi-tariffs. The quasi-tariffs are still raising our borrowing costs and we're not even getting any revenue from them. Idiotic.

Pound foolishness … threaten to invade an ally to shake a few duckets from their pockets and give Trump a chance to preen about what a successful bully he is.
This was really about the growing influence of China in Central America. The pocket change is just beer money. Biden asleep in rehobeth beach the last 4 years.

I bet the American citizens of Venezuelan heritage didn’t expect Trump to cooperate with a leftist dictator like Maduro or to ship their Venezuelan cousins back into Maduro’s hands.

FAFO.
This isn’t just a trump thing. Just about every president has done business with various dictators. Don’t act like this is something new.

Bingo. Scroll back a few pages and I predicted all the Trump voters here who have been silent for 3-4 days would be here defending this nonsense just as soon as the right wing media gave them their talking points.
No reason to comment on all that is going on in Trump world until things have time to play out. The tariff issue worked itself out and Trump didn’t plunge the economy into a 2nd Great Depression. I see no reason to weigh in at every step while the sausage is being made.

We don’t know that. It appears Trump got additional concessions like the joint strike force and Canada agreeing to declare the cartel as a terrorist organization. Also, there will be additional negotiations over the next 30 days while the pause is in effect.
Wow, agreeing to declare a terrorist organization a terrorist organization.

What amazing results. Well worth all of the market fluctuation, diminished relationship with our closest allies, and new opportunities given to China to fill the international trade vacuum that was created by our fickle leader proving the U.S. couldn't be trusted to have our allies' backs.

Gullible cucks, each and every one of you.

Did you see Trudeau's announcement. He said multiple times, "we are and will be."

The only thing Trump got was a "fentanyl czar" which is hilarious because Canada doesn't have "czars" in the way we do. Their executive branch doesn't work that way.

Meanwhile, Mexico actually agreed to a reduced troop presence on the border, so there's that.

This is all a repeat of the hilarious LNG debacle from years ago. World leaders have figured out that if you call Trump's bluff, he will back down, and you can make illusory promises because Trump has no idea how the world actually works or any of the facts on the ground.

And all the while, interest rates are still elevated; business investment will fall; and Americans everywhere got anxiety about their economic prospects. It should not be the job of the US president to scare the fuck out of autoworkers just so he can score a photo op.

It seems like Canada and Mexico are managing Trump rather well. The biggest parts of their promises to him are things they either made a deal with Biden for, or things they were already planning to do. If you can make the same promise twice and get a lunatic off your back, all the better.

Sheinbaum literally entertained Trump with a bit of military theater. I’m really struggling to see how it can be justified as a win for him.

I'm pretty sure Mexico decreased their troop commitment. Trump, of course, being clueless, thought Mexico had zero troops. So when she said 10K, Trump jumped on it. Never mind that there were 15K there last year. LOL.
