Requiem For The West

Trump and Vance have put a stake in the heart of the free world.

"...It is a fascinating moment, isn’t it, when Reagan’s vision of the West is finally swept into the dustbin of history by a Republican president.

And that is the only solid conclusion one can make after this week of astonishing incompetence and madness. We only saw Donald Trump’s foreign policy darkly in his first term — constrained, as he was, by a handful of white-knuckled Republicans in the executive branch.

Now we see it face to face. It’s a vision where international law disappears, great powers divide up the planet into spheres of influence, and the strong always control the weak. It’s Trump’s vision of domestic politics as well. And of life.

Control, plunder, gloat. This is the Trump way.

...What he is doing is not about making a tough peace deal with Russia, recalibrating NATO, or protecting Ukraine’s democracy. He is merely setting the terms of a new alliance and relationship with the criminal Russian dictatorship — directed against the European democracies.

More TDS from yours truly? But what other conclusion can one draw when the president cuts the Ukrainians and their European allies out of the dealmaking, has already conceded Ukraine’s conquered territory before any talks, insists that Ukraine started the war, that Zelensky, and not Putin, is the dictator, and is demanding reparations in advance ... from Ukraine, not Russia! The reparations amount to a US claim on 50 percent of Ukraine's mineral deposits forever. It’s the equivalent of “We’re gonna take Iraq’s oil.” It’s a form of imperial pillage. But it’s vintage Trump.

And notice that this isn’t part of full negotiations with Russia. Trump wanted Zelensky to sign away half his country’s mineral rights to the US in perpetuity before he had asked anything of Putin. And he gave Zelensky three hours to read and sign it. Trump, of course, was incensed when Zelensky refused. This is how a Trump official described the mood: “We created a monster with Zelensky. And these Trump-deranged Europeans who won’t send troops are giving him terrible advice.”

Zelensky is a monster but Putin is our friend. ...

... Vance’s speech and Trump’s remarks make it clear that the US is no longer in alliance with Europe at all, but with Russia against Europe, and Europe’s liberal elites. The goal now is to replace those elites with Moscow-friendly governments, bent on repatriation of illegal migrants. Hence the stunning endorsement of the AfD by Elon Musk — the second most powerful man in the Trump administration.

After what the president and vice president have said this week, it’s fair to say, I think, that NATO is effectively over. No one can even faintly believe that the US under Trump would abide by Article 5 to defend another member state. Trump has just told the Baltic states: you’re on your own now. If you resist Russian control, you’ll deserve what you get. ..."
Sullivan is a panicky little bitch so I’d read him with a silo full of salt.

Thiel isn't a libertarian.
Libertarianism is typically a transitional phase, especially for young men. Thiel is one of the “libertarian-turned-authoritarian techno bros” to quote Jamie Raskin. Most people outgrow their libertarian “idealism” but some become stunted and maintain libertarian leanings deep into adulthood. We see that among a few posters on this very board.

Last week Elon
  • Ignored a desperate plea for help from the mother of his youngest child
  • Ignored a desperate plea for help from the mother of the child he uses as a human shield
  • Called an astronaut a slur for pointing out his obvious lies
  • Called Tom Hanks a pedophile
  • Followed a 17 year old girl "influencer"
I mean, there was more, but that's a busy week for anyone.

Yep. And while Congressional Republicans have stayed mostly silent because of their fear of getting called RINOs by Trump himself and primaried by even more extreme Trumpers with Dear Leader's endorsement, what they have yet to realize is that as more Republicans are hurt by these cuts they won't take their anger out on Dear Leader, they'll take it out on them, likely by just staying home and not voting. Not that many of them will be willing to face Trump's wrath, but they are going to be in a difficult position with their base. Sucks for them, I guess.
If things continue down this slope, it also affects those folks who sat the vote out. Whether "moderate independants", "progressives", or just plain uninterested. Congessional pubs will be in a fix. The Tillis tightrope act will only go so far.

Bump to merge — merged older Operation “Wetback” thread as background to this topic.

How many millions have we spent of border Kabuki? Where is the outrage from resident peddlers of “are you claiming there’s no fraud and inefficiency in the government?!”?

This morning I see MSNBC is moving Symone Sanders and Michael Steele’s show from weekend mornings to 6 pm weekdays (in place of Joy Reid’s show).

I’m a fan of the show, but personally like it on weekend mornings, rather than the 7 pm hour on weekdays. Oh well, it’s a promotion for them.

I have known folks that are on some combo of "govt benefits" that do not work
That continue to exist because of those benefits
I guess we are "culling the herd"????

Update.

May have already been posted, but I'm not up to date on this thread

CDC's "disease detectives" apparently spared in DOGE cuts at health agencies

So everything is fine now that they went back and reversed their decision? How long before these workers get tired of being dehumanized and used as pawns and say fuck you? But keep on posting, as doge has to go back and fix things they are breaking, and pretend that it is okay and things are working as they should. This entire process is instilling fear and distrust in the workforce. It’s counterproductive to their stated goals, but very productive towards their unstated objectives. They really do want to traumatize the workforce. The problem is that if their experiment fails and the best and brightest that were called to public service and the entire research and development apparatus that contributes to our country’s success is cast aside in such a reckless manner it will already be too late.
