For the school kids, the better off kids likely have recess, gym, PE……To be fair, there are a lot of other issues that make it difficult for Americans to exercise as much as they should. Our work culture is one. Economic disparities are another. And environmental issues are another.
There’s a lot of interest at present in the “social determinants of health.” Things like:
—if you live near a park or have sidewalks in your neighborhood, you’re more likely to walk. But poor people and minorities are less likely to live near parks or have sidewalks in their neighborhoods, so they’re less likely to walk. Thus more likely to be obese.
—If you’re poor, you’re unlikely to buy a gym memberships or have home gym equipment. If you have a white collar job, your employer is more likely to include a gym membership as a health benefit or have on-site exercise space available.
—for school kids, if you go to a decent school, you’re likely to learn more about proper nutrition and fitness than if you go to a crappy school
Those are often the first to go after Art and Music in poorer schools.
