Donald Trump’s top brass gathered reporters in West Palm Beach, Fla., this month to showcase the inner workings of the former president’s campaign and exude a we-have-it-under-control confidence.
As PowerPoints flashed on a screen, they laid out their 90-day plan — the 11 percent of the U.S. population they had identified as “target persuadables,” a ground strategy that would motivate Republicans and discourage Democrats and the five-word frame to dismantle his new rival, Vice President Kamala Harris, as “failed, weak and dangerously liberal.”


The only thing missing was the candidate, who sat a few miles away at his Mar-a-Lago estate with his own plans for blowing up the news cycle.

Hours after the Aug. 8 briefing ended, Trump appeared on cable news networks for a news conference filled with false or unsupported claims unrelated to the campaign’s plan to defeat Harris — his crowd sizes, the “unconstitutional” elevation of Harris as the nominee, a near-helicopter crash with former San Francisco mayor Willie Brown that Brown says never happened. Trump decided to hold a news conference because he heard his team was holding the briefing, but he wanted to talk, according to people familiar with the situation who like others spoke on the condition of anonymity to reveal internal discussions. The reporters who had come to South Florida for a campaign briefing suddenly found themselves with a more pressing story.

This is where the switch to Harris has been so devastating, especially with the change being fast and orderly. Trump never defined Clinton or Biden. His stupid little nicknames didn’t matter. Benghazi, emails, Hunter, and being too old were all the product of a lot of work from a lot of people outside of the Trump campaign. There’s plenty of time for Trump to settle on a message and deliver it. There isn’t enough time to craft something the Times can hammer Harris with on their behalf.

Combine that with “Weird” making surrogates less effective and suddenly it looks like Trump will actually need to campaign.

The lack of crowd response at his rallies now is just remarkable, especially when compared to his rallies in 2016 and 2020 and even earlier this year. He's mocking his opponent as he's done so many times before but most of his audience just seem rooted to their seats and mostly silent and bored. He keeps trying to replay all of his old hits and they don't seem to be working nearly as well the third time.

It's hilarious reading the comments section to that tweet - Dear Leader's followers are pitching a fit and claiming that the arena is packed and any attempts to say otherwise are just "liberal LIES!" and so on. They're so upset you can almost see their spittle coming right through the screen. Whether the crowd size claim is accurate or not doesn't matter, it's clear that not only is Trump's self-esteem built around his "huge" crowd sizes, so is that of many of his supporters.

I’ve been waiting for someone—anyone—to corner him on that simple question for any of the thousands of “people are saying”/“everyone knows” claims he’s made since 2015.
