Are we though?
What matters is that MAGA feels more free. That is all Trump needs.

I think we are perilously close to being game over. Trump is continuously grabbing more powers and testing the waters for more. (DC is a test case. It’s by far the easiest target so chosen first.)

None of these power grabs have caused any significant problems. Democrats are powerless and the right is unified behind every single move. Trump will not stop as long as his core support remains and there is no sign that he can lose that core support.

At some point general public opinion will cease to matter.

We are in the early stages of what is to come. I hope to God in am wrong. I will gladly eat crow if so.

I don’t believe this scenario is inevitable but it seems like a possibility.

Large cities like Chicago that are being targeted by Trump should ask for more Fed $$ to hire thousands of new cops instead of sending federalized troops. Take a page out of Bill Clinton. Triangulate the issue. Even as crime has been already falling. Also say - we don't want to be like Memphis, St. Louis, NOLA, Little Rock, Jackson, MS, and Birmingham. Send a message that Dems are strong on crime prevention, while Trump just wants to be a dick-tater.

“… Are these the cities with the highest crime rates? Not remotely.

Are their crime rates spiking? No.

What these cities have in common is Black mayors. Trump is trying to make an example of these cities. And in doing so, he’s exercising a form of revenge for the “humiliation” of Reconstruction and integration. The federal government occupied cities to hurt whites? He’s going to do the opposite.

This is the same administration that is purging the military’s leadership of women and people of color. The same one that is pressuring the Smithsonian to stop focusing on “how bad slavery was.” The same one that’s threatening the livelihood of colleges and universities unless they abolish all programs related to diversity, equity, and inclusiveness. The same one criticizing Cracker Barrel, a company built on small-town southern nostalgia, for going “woke” and abandoning its heritage. This is a redeemer government.”

“… that’s a very strong preventative and everybody that’s heard it agrees with it.”

Nah...... because arresting, charging and imprisoning criminals doesn't bring down violent crime, anyway. oh, and it's racist.

“… they’re gonna fight me … Crime in DC was the worst it ever was. You know they make up stories crime in DC was the worst ever in history and now over the last 13 days we’ve worked so hard …”

A CNN fact-checker shredded a deluge of Donald Trump’s false claims about crime in Washington, D.C.

During Trump’s second Oval Office press conference of the day on Monday, the president defended his deployment of the National Guard and takeover of the police force in the nation’s capital, touting an 11-day murder-free period.

Despite polling showing how unpopular Trump’s moves are in D.C., the president continued to claim that, under his watch, the city has transformed from “the most dangerous place in the world” to the “safest place” in under two weeks.

Towards the end of Trump’s White House meeting with South Korean President Lee Jae Myung on Monday, CNN News Central brought in senior reporter Daniel Dale to fact-check the U.S. commander-in-chief’s claims.

Asked whether Trump’s claim about D.C.’s first murder-free week in “many years,” Dale responded that “it is not accurate,” citing other similar stretches this year in the district.

“There has currently been the 11-day stretch without a reported homicide, but that also happened earlier this year,” he said. In February and March, there was a 16-day stretch with no reported homicides in the district. So the president is exaggerating again.”

Dale also pointed to another claim that was “not even close to true”: that the capital’s crime was at an all-time high when he took office.

While D.C.’s murder rate two years ago hit levels not seen since the crack cocaine epidemic of the 1980s and 1990s, the period since has seen a steep decline under the leadership of Chief Pamela Smith, who was named to her role in 2023.

Of course it is tied to racism and lost cause bullshit.

Too bad he never said anything about arresting or charging. Mass incarceration is indeed not an effective anti-crime solution. Sorry to burst your balloon again, but the estimate of the effects of incarceration as an anti-crime strategy is a 10-15% reduction. Which isn't nothing, but doesn't remotely come close to justifying the massive costs.

But anyway, I am confident that Trump's deployments are increasing crime, not decreasing it. An assault is an assault, whether by ICE thug or private citizen. When the history books are written, they will show a sharp increase in disappearances. That is how it happens. Every. Single. Time.
