Very, very well-said.
I'd say that I identify as a conservative liberal- the 'conservative' being an adjective and the 'liberal' is a noun. I still believe that big, rapid change isn't always good, but I firmly believe in equality and progress. I believe in greatly limiting government regulation when it comes to individual freedoms and liberties; in particular, personal choices around healthcare, marriage, consensual sex partners, what to eat, what to read, etc. I believe in greatly expanding government regulation when it comes to protecting the environment, protecting workers, protecting vulnerable groups, and providing a helping hand to those in need. I believe in having the strongest, most well-equipped, most lethal military force in the world that helps maintain peace through strength. I believe in providing aid and resources to our democratic allies and friends abroad in their times of need. I believe in the rule of law. I believe that America's strength is in our diversity and that we should have *both* strong, secure borders but also a highly-efficient and welcoming system of legal immigration so that the best, brightest, and hardest working in the world can come here to the land of opportunity and make their lives- and ours- better. I believe that in the wealthiest country in the history of the world, nobody should go hungry or homeless through no fault of their own. I believe that every able-bodied soul should work, but that we also have a duty and an obligation to provide a helping hand up to those in our society who are trying hard and working hard but who struggle to get ahead.
I left the Republican Party and the conservative movement when it abandoned every single solitary one of those ideals.
