Over the last 9 years, I’ve taken my older brother into a slew of emergency rooms, from New Hanover Medical Center to what I still call Memorial Hospital (the UNC Healthcare in Chapel Hill) to a hospital in Albemarle (that’s Stanly County near Charlotte, not near the coast) to a hospital north of Charlotte and one near Concord.

As per his Pittsboro GP’s instructions to me, “He’s going to die soon without a shitload of help. He has to go to the ER now. When you reach the ER, tell them he’s going through alcohol withdrawal…….anything else and he’ll sit in the waiting room.”

So, my Dad and I drove my recalcitrant brother to North Carolina Memorial Hospital’s ER.

Oh……yeah……

On each of these adventures through the American medical system, NO ONE asked for an ID……now, 24-48-72 hours later…..that changed.

When you accompany someone into an ER and say, “Alcohol Withdrawal,” you get rapid-fire response. Of course, he was going through withdrawal.

I don't say this lightly, and I know people will suffer even more than they already have under this incompetent administration, but my reaction to this is, "Go for it." Let the Pubs create all the chaos and pain they've been wanting to inflict on America for decades now. And do it now, when Americans still have plenty of time to feel the effects before they go to the polls next November. Make America suffer, Pubs. This is your chance.

EMTALA REQUIRES hospitals to provide emergency care to undocumented persons. There would be no point in determining proof of citizenship. The hospital would be required by federal law to provide care either way.
