One thing none of these people addressed was how they could ever again justify refusing to keep the government open in the future given that they just showed that if Trump & Republicans cause enough pain they'll fold like a house of cards. Good luck deciding to support a shutdown anytime in the future, as Republicans will hammer them with this vote to reopen, and will happily let Democrats shut down the government knowing they'll fold sooner or later.

Vote them all the fuck out starting with Tim Kaine and all the shitty New Hampster folks. I really hate that they are so obtuse to their constituents? Gotta go ASAP!
TBF, a lot of Tim Kaine’s constituents are Federal workers who haven’t been paid in over a month and at risk of permanently losing their jobs.

MAGA has got their boots on our necks and these craven fucks just said “use your heel and grind”

Absolutely appalling.

Our government is broken. Giving a shit is a miserable experience and I’m done with it.

“… The agreement contains a “minibus” — three full-year appropriations bills that will fund certain departments like Agriculture through the end of the fiscal year next fall — and a continuing resolution to fund the rest of the government at existing spending levels through Jan. 30.

It would also fully fund the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, once known as food stamps, through next September, a major flashpoint in the shutdown.

The sources said the deal also reverses Trump’s attempted layoffs of federal workers during the shutdown through RIFs, or “reduction in force” notifications.

But in a major concession from Democrats, it does not include an extension of expiring Affordable Care Act subsidies. Allowing the funds to lapse would raise insurance premiums for millions of Americans unless they are extended. Instead, the Democrats settled for a promise that the Senate will vote on a bill to extend the subsidies by the end of the second week of December, with the outcome uncertain, two of the sources said.

Even then, House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., has said he won’t promise that the House will vote on extending the subsidies….”

For those of you upset with the compromise, it is worth pointing out that the compromise just funds the government to January. If the Republicans stiff the Democrats on ACA subsidies, the Democrats have the option to shut down the government again.

As someone who has been working the whole time but hasn’t been paid in 40+ days because of this shutdown, I’m fine with the deal. There will be a vote on the ACA subsidies. If Republicans reject the subsidies, they’ll pay an electoral price for it next year. The Dems successfully made this issue front of mind. Thats about all you can do as the minority party. This thing was over when Trump asked SCOTUS to allow him not to use available money to feed kids. You can’t out-crazy crazy. There is nothing that is actually motivating Republicans to open the government. How long are federal employees supposed to be working for IOUs? How long are we supposed to withhold SNAP from kids? It’s easy for people with no skin in the game to say that I should work for free indefinitely, but IOUs aren’t putting food in my kids’ stomachs.

I agree, although reluctantly. Yes, the Dems could hold out and make Trump and the Pubs the bad guys by not wanting to fund SNAP and continue the ACA subsidies, but the problem is Trump and the Pubs don't care. I think Trump and the Pubs are already being blamed for the shutdown by the majority of folks. But the problem is the Dems actually have a soul and care about people getting paid and kids having food to eat. I just hope the majority of Americans remember this the next election and it's another blue wave so the Dems can get control of Congress and this crap can stop happening. Maybe people will realize that fighting ober DEI and trans rights is less important that having a job, being able to afford groceries and health care, and kids having food to eat. I am just so tired of the chaos that has been going on since Trump took office and the Pubs keep enabling him.

To what end? The ACA will have been ended by that point for millions who couldn't enroll because they cant afford premiums. There would be no moral high ground, no public appetite for anything righteous.

There's no going back and no threat ever again to shut government down by Dems.

I completely understand and agree but there will never be a vote on ACA subsidies in the House. It will not happen. We need to be honest about that and about any power moving forward. The Dems are a bad minority party because they care about these things.

Voters won't remember a week from now much less a year from now.

It seemed they were fed up with the Pubs in the most recent election. I don't really see Trump changing that before the next election. He is just trying to be as cruel, hateful and vengeful as he can while he can. He doesn't care about the Pubs and what it will do to them in the elections because he'll either be out of office, cancel the elections so he can be a dictator, or hopefully dead before then.

It is Congress. If it wanted, it could require insurance companies to enroll people retroactively. So the open enrollment period is not the end all, be all of the analysis.

That said, I don't think Republicans were ever going to vote to reinstate the subsidies. This was always a play to get the issue highlighted.

Would you just keep the government closed forever?

Voters didnt have to remember the shutdown last week. They were in it. Americans are by and large ignorant and lazy. They won't remember and they will be more motivated by the next brain rot on TikTok than anything about this shutdown.

I Have said i would reopen it but we also need to be honest about what we are dealing with. There will NEVER be a vote on ACA subsidies with Johnson as speaker.
