Syracuse, sure -- it doesn't stop snowing until late April or early May. SMU? No idea. Methodists don't like baseball?
Syracuse cut baseball in 1972 and SMU in 1980, both for financial reasons. Although for Syracuse, long winters and low fan support were also listed as reasons.

The joys of a single-elimination baseball tournament. I understand why the ACC decided to go this route, but it is not a particularly good way to determine the best team in the conference.
And the regular season matchups-with more opponents than allowable weekends to play them all -means some awfully tilted advantages for some teams-disadvantages for others

Agreed. Of course, none of it really matters. The big issue is where the NCAA ranks you.

The baseball tournament should have been eliminated long ago in favor of another weekend of regular season games.

At this point, the leagues are so geographically diverse that we should just eliminate nonconference weekends altogether and start with conference series right out of the gate so most of the teams will play each other.

Now that SMU is in the ACC I bet they re start their baseball program within the next few years. Only issue may be Title IX.

No, I don't think they will. Baseball has become exceptionally expensive to keep up with and SMU won't be getting a lot of revenue from the ACC which will be a shell of itself in another 3 years.

SMU wants a powerhouse football program.

Their billionaire boosters want one. Legally and NCAA-wise, they can replicate the “Pony Express” and never sniff probation.

Baseball is a distraction from that.

Plus, the Texas Rangers are nearby. How many college baseball powers are in a Major League Baseball market?

But not many major Div I universities are located in cities with Major League teams. Having said that:

Da U
So Cal
Ga Tech
Rice

  • Da U existed way before the Marlins. Do the Marlins have fans?
  • So Cal and UCLA had baseball well before the Dodgers moved to LA
  • GA Tech is a college baseball power?
  • Rice baseball existed before the Astros. Is Rice a college baseball powe?
Who is the college baseball power who started up in an existing MLB market?

Dallas Baptist has had a pretty good recent run
