If Veesaar stays in the draft he has to enter the portal, no?
No (and yes). Massive disclaimer — as I understand it —

No he doesn’t have to enter the portal. But if he doesn’t and then opts against the draft, he’s locked into UNC and would have 0 leverage in negotiations. We could offer the bare minimum and he’d have to accept or sit out the year.

So, it’s in his interest to go into the portal - even if he plans to return to UNC.

No, college basketball players testing the NBA Draft waters do notneed to enter the transfer portal simply to explore professional options. Players can declare for the draft, participate in the combine, and return to their original school, provided they do not hire an agent and withdraw by the NCAA's deadline.

Right. It's basically locking UNC into a position where they are tied to Veesaar and can't bring in a starting 5 until late May

Everyone saying you can't wait for him. Well, if he doesn't enter the portal that seems like a sign that they are willing to wait

Dook has several players returning, the #1 recruiting class with 3 of the top 14 players in the country and the #1 guard from the transfer portal. They’ll be loaded with talent once again.
Fuck dook.
They always have that.
They always win the preseason award.
Fuck em
They go out before they sniff the FF just like this past season

Didn't mean as a requirement to test the draft

But to give both sides enough options in the case he doesn't go pro(er)

Generally the late guys to withdraw from the draft are portal players

Unless he decides 100% he's in the draft no matter what... it would be silly of him not to enter the portal (unless of course he decides to stay at UNC and closes a deal before the portal closes). And even if he is 100% certain he's staying in the draft, it would still be silly of him not to enter the portal... things happen, always have an insurance policy... especially when it's a free one.

Now the real rub is that barring him anouncing he's made a deal to return to UNC, him entering the portal while pursuing the draft would be the next best option for us. If he does not commit to come back and does not enter the portal, it essentially means he's closed the door on his college options and moved on.

If the coaching carousel takes Dusty May to the Bulls then what are our options with his current roster and/or recruits?

Same with Golden?

Meanwhile, Carolina is left wondering do they need to go after someone to replace Veesaar or not. If they wait and he ends up going in the draft, they are screwed. If they go after someone else and he enters the portal but doesn't enter the draft, it could push him to leave and Carolina ends up with someone not as good to replace him.

I mean, that's been the case a number of times in the past; players have had the option to declare and return for a decade now. It is one of the breaks of modern high-level basketball. Get the best player you can get and hope that there is enough money available for Veesaar should he decide to return. That's all we can do.

Scummy as it might be, I hope we are reaching out via back channels to guys not in the portal...

Even guys like Nolan Winter (stretch 4 from Wisky) that have announced they are staying put -- well, a couple million dollars might change that stance in a hurry.

We need to have Plans A thru Z ready to roll, just so damn unpredictable in this current environment
