It frees up an awful lot of cash. I think that cash can be used to bolster the team in important ways. Maybe we don’t get the elite stretch 5 center in Henri, but maybe we get a stronger 5 and beef up the power forward position. And we also get a good backup PG.

I was never sold on the Henri/Steveson combo and I think this gives us an opportunity to become a stronger rebounding team. I’d assume we add at least two Euros now.
Agreed. Centers are the most overpriced position right now. This will free up money for other options.

Reports are that HV turned down as much as $6m to go to the draft instead. If he is selected 30th, he would make around $2.4m each of his first two seasons. Gutsy call.

I've seen the mocks, but I can't imagine he's not going earlier. Seven footers with that kind of touch and decent vision are gold. Frankly I'm shocked he isn't closer to the lottery. Still probably won't make $6mm, but he's going to have a nice NBA career IMO.

He's not expected to be a top 20 pick. Usually mocked around the end of the 1st/early 2nd. If he goes second round this will look like a pretty bad decision, but it's his decision.
The top 5-8 2nd round picks have been getting guaranteed contracts for the last few years. If he can end up with a multi-year guaranteed contract, then he's likely made the right choice. If not, then he's likely ended up on the wrong side of this decision.

I expect that unless he's injured come the draft that he'll end up with a guaranteed contract, as he's projected in the range where that is fairly commonplace now.

Any contract he signs as a second rounder, even if he gets multiple years guaranteed, is almost certainly going to have less guaranteed money than he would have gotten in one year at UNC.

But, to be fair, money isn't the only part of the decision. He wants to play in the NBA, so I can't fault him for wanting to get there sooner. And getting there sooner gets him to a second contract one year sooner, which is where the real (potential) money is, anyway.

Yeah, that didn't happen. So many reports, so little actual truth.
I certainly have no knowledge of the dollar amount, but Sherell McMillan at IC reported that they offered Veesaar "the largest NIL contract North Carolina has ever offered a player."

I (maybe naively) have been assuming that the 5th year of eligibility thing would get kicked down the road. If they end up allowing that for this CBB portal cycle then I don’t even know what to say haha. That would be ultimate chaos.
It should get kicked out of the park. and of the guys from '26 are available... is that true for the guys that didn't play in the NBA from 24 and 25?

How far back do we go?

That was an ENORMOUS steak I just ate. How big? Bigger than any steak I've eaten in the last two weeks.

Yeah, but he gets any of the guaranteed contracts and therefore selected to a team that thinks he fits their system, he can be developed for a role which gives him a little rope... and those guys get a great opportunity to stick.

If he came back and had a similar year, but 34% from three, his options could drastically change due to the narrative... he'll still get a chance to make a team, but willing to cut bait because there's not anyone in leadership that took a bet on you.

I think it's the right move unless he knows he can dominate next year and continue to shoot the lights out.

He had a career year

The article i read said UNC only offered $4M, but other teams had offered $6M.

I take your point. But I don't think you have any more information to disprove the number $6 million than the other poster has to prove it. It might not be right, but I'm confident Veesaar was offered at least a few million dollars.

I have precisely zero information. I'm just going with Bayesian priors. Also, I don't think $6M for Henri can be squared with other reporting about our NIL budget. But I could be wrong there.

If we did offer Henri $6M, that suggests we have quite a bit of money left to pick up players.

Bummer but not surprising. Hope we can reel in some decent bigs. Will really need it to have a decent season.

The report is other schools offered $6m and we could have gone as high as $4m
