UNC Basketball Possible coaches - UNC hires ex-Nuggets HC Michael Malone

How many NBA coaches with no college experience went on to become college coaches? Your question could be a sample size issue.
Mike Woodson at Indiana is one.

If you are willing to consider former player/assistant coach types, then the list is a lot longer and a lot less successful.

I will add, he does indeed have a little bit of college coaching experience - as an asst. under Pete Gillen at Providence for 4 years including the 1996-1997 season. (Elite Eight Run)
Record: 24-12 (10-8 Big East) Coach: Pete Gillen
Tournament: The Friars were a #10 seed in the NCAA Tournament and advanced to the Elite Eight, defeating Marquette, Duke, and Chattanooga before losing in overtime to Arizona, 96–92.

I remember that Duke game. Good times.

He coached God Shammgod.

I'm in.

Hmm. I believe I questioned the IC reporting, lol. The problem with IC reporting is that there is no reason they should know anything. They know what people choose to tell them, and they are not trustworthy for that reason IMHO.

Who is Danny?
IC is also a click bait site. They relish and profit greatly from these scenarios.

My two cents: Like most others I'm feeling rather underwhelmed (I was really hoping it would be Lloyd) and I know nothing about the guy. Having said that, I'll certainly support him and at least we've got a coach and can start recruiting in the portal. I'll just wait and see what happens next season, when we'll actually get to see him in action on the court. And like everyone else I'll hope for the best.

The reality is the only sure fire great options were May and Lloyd. Everything else is hoping you make a good decision but more often than not it will go poorly. Hope he is great. Glad to hear he might retain some staff. Hopefully he can retain Dixon, Powell, Vessar and the signed freshman.

I wonder what percentage of P5 hires make it past 5yrs? Just curious. It will be an interesting few weeks/ months.

I still don’t love this idea. But I think part of the initial negativity of my reaction is created by the perception that this was a desperation hire based on IC never saying anything about Malone other than listing him at the bottom of the coaching board. It may still be correct that this was a desperation hire but I’d like to at least wait for more information about how this came about.

Does your Nuggets fan friend know anything about basketball? Who does he think developed Jokic and Murray? It was Malone. Also Peyton Watson and Michael Porter Jr.

If ever there was an NBA superstar who was "developed," it's Jokic.

Malone finished 5 times in the top 10 for NBA coach of the year. His highest ranking was 3rd, but considering he coached the Nuggets for 9 years, 5 times in the top 10 seems notable.

Yeah, he knows a good bit and I trust his instincts overall. He was well ahead of the fire Michael Malone train, though I do think NBA fans in general tend to be too hard on coaching

He doesn't put much stock in Malone's role in Jokic development. Says the Nuggets have one of the top developmental programs in the league, which Adelman has been in charge of since 2017

Says MM isn't much of an X's and O's guy (he was known as a defensive minded coach IIRC when taking the Denver job), doesn't develop talent, but is great at delegating and hiring staff

I hear you on MM's Nuggets resume and winning years, but there's only so low you can when riding a player like Jokic. Those Nuggets teams were very much "Iron-5" for a while with terrible bench play

I’m curious what will become of Tanner. I could see Malone wanting to bring in his GM. I knew Tanner was the highest paid GM in basketball, but had no idea his buyout is 4 million. That’s bonkers.

Not being much of an x and o guy seems to be opposite to everything I have been reading.

This is good news. Both because of the family connection and because he’s surrounding himself with guys with college experience.

As I said before, hiring “outside the family” doesn’t have to mean losing family feel.
Certainly remains to be seen, but it’s an encouraging sign.

I just don’t think Malone is a guy to accommodate that vibe for long, if it doesn’t suit him. He’ll be on his best behavior out of the gate for sure though.
