UNC Basketball Possible coaches - UNC hires ex-Nuggets HC Michael Malone

Positive comments from Kenny.

Don’t tune out early, the last 5 seconds are a must.

It is correct to say that he is the only coach in college basketball who is an NBA champion. It is also correct to say that "resume" has been a complete failure in football. I just think that particular point isnt going to be as powerful given recent context at Carolina.

Doesn’t mean they can’t be retained. If Malone thinks they’re worth keeping, he’ll need to meet with them and get them an offer.
It is possible. But I cited a stat above that of the 80+ ACC players that entered the portal last year, only one withdrew and came back.

I don't think the consensus on this board would be above a B, and we're all Carolina fans. I think the uncertainty of a first time college head coach navigating NIL and the portal and if he will be able to recruit and relate to teenagers.
There’s plenty of relating to teenagers in the NBA. Half the NBA is younger than half the college players these days. This isn’t like the NFL where everyone’s at least 3 years removed from HS. There are plenty of 18/19 year olds in the NBA factoring in one and dones plus foreign players. There are also plenty of older players in college with people getting 5 and 6 years of eligibility sometimes

First questionable decision is in the books.
Hoots, I can see that. Roy’s staff extolled Hoots and how he welcomed them to Chapel Hill and helped them learn UNC and the area and the ACC. Hoots helps keep the family intact.

Sean May - Carolina fans have said since he played that he was a smart, well-coached, cerebral player. Is he a good coach? That jury is still deliberating. I hope he is a good coach.

Pat Sullivan - this one is questionable; but, Malone calls him “Sully” and seems comfortable with him. Malone should be comfortable with his staff. My concern about Pat Sullivan as a coach is that every job he’s ever had is UNC-Family connected. Who has tried to hire Pat Sullivan because they think he’s a top-notch coach?

lol Y'all would have been better off with Karl Malone and John Stockton as co-HC. Does Joker have eligibility?

Maybe he can make them box lunches.

Obviously a risky hire...seems like it's either going to be a huge success or total shitshow...no in-between. We will learn a lot soon with the remaining staff hires and portal haul.
We fired Hubert for “in-between.”

I figure Malone has 2-3 seasons. He’s not family.

How many entered the portal and found no good landing site? But, their original school was happy to see them leave?

I don’t think that’s correct about Sullivan. Sullivan’s first assistant coaching job after his first stint at UNC (under Guthridge) was with the women’s team at UNCW. Then Larry Brown hired him as an assistant with the Pistons. After that, he had a number of NBA assistant coaching jobs that he landed without any UNC connections on the team (as far as I can tell). He was with the Nets (under Lawrence Frank) from the 2005-06 season through 2008. Then he went back to the Pistons (then initially coached by Michael Curry; John Kuester was hired as the head coach the next season and kept Sullivan on staff, but he wasn’t there when Sullivan was initially hired for that stint with Detroit) for three seasons. After that, he went to the Wizards for three seasons (under Randy Wittman). Then he went to the Clippers for two seasons (under Doc Rivers). Then he went to the Knicks for two seasons (initially under David Fizdale). His last season in the NBA was with the Timberwolves (initially under Ryan Saunders) in a player development role.

After letting sink in and sleeping on it, I think this hire is solid all things considered. Probably has as much upside as any of the realistic candidates did

Did $10M for Byington really make sense and is he definitely a better coach? Is Billy Donovan clearly a better coach?

Assuming MM is excited for the opportunity and hungry to build after how Denver ended, I don’t see why he can’t do well at the college level

Sullivan has a decent name in the NBA I think Not HC material-but as a good Asst .Several teams hired him
PersonallyI think May has done a good job with the big men-I mean he has had a lack of talent some years- but for ex Bacot and Veassar
