UNC Basketball Possible coaches - UNC hires ex-Nuggets HC Michael Malone

I think there's probably something to that. Optimists and pessimists will usually have opposing reactions to a hire, but by a week in the energy and excitement and newness of the "new" hire sort of tends to buoy everyone along.

I'm already more optimistic about the hire than I was when it was announced, though I still have doubts. As I said before, speaking for me personally I think it was the shock of Malone (who had never been seriously discussed as a candidate on IC) that made it seem like a desperation hire.
If the press conference is to be believed Newmark had to sell Malone for over a week and 5 hours on Sunday after Malone had repeatedly said no.

Certainly the folks who have been very angsty about losing the "family" aspect of the program should be more at ease. Saying all the right things in the presser doesn't mean there won't be problems down the road but everything about Malone (including that interview from this past October) suggests that his respect for the program and tradition is genuine. (Now we'll see what happens when his daughter graduates and the NBA comes calling, lol).
Sounds like a modern blended family to me!

Definitely think some of the guys in the portal stay if he wants them to do so (and we pay fmv)

I have to admit, I am feeling better about this hire. I like what Antawn is saying and I did like the press conference clips I've seen. Cautiously optimistic.

Apparently, he was the first person Newmark and Bubba approached about coaching. Told them no, repeatedly, told Sullivan no, and even told Roy no.
I am definitely coming around on this higher, but it needs to be absolutely not true that Malone was the first person they approached, and it needs to be absolutely true that Tommy Lloyd and Dusty May, then TJ Otzelberger, Ben McCollum, and Mark Byington, in that order, were the first ones approached.

It's worded a bit ambiguously. I'm assuming he wasn't the first person offered, but the ADs doing their diligence and interviewing/gauging interest from a lot of folks. He being the first they checked on.

For me, the big takeaway from that article is that Roy personally asked him to take the job. That is massive for the family/program, imo.

It’s pretty normal for new coaches to retain an assistant or two from the previous staff for continuity’s sake. I would be surprised if UNC mandated that Malone had to keep some of those guys around for the sake of “family” or whatever if he didn’t want them.
I hope UNC didn’t tell Malone he had to keep any of Hubert’s assistants.

Certain people make sense to keep (those that help keep alum players and managers connected to the program, UNC, and Chapel Hill). We want those summer and early Fall pick-up games.

Those people mostly aren’t current assistants (who are often on the road recruiting and scouting).

We want veterans teaching current players in summer games.

That assumes that searches are linear. They aren't.

UNC and Turnkey reached out to dozens of people right away to gauge interest. That is step one. From there, you whittle down the list of people. And you are interviewing and negotiating with multiple people simultaneously.

So, I am sure we reached out to Stevens, May, Lloyd, Donovan, TJO, etc. all at the exact same time.

Also, this isn't necessarily Malone's last job. I mean, if it works out very well, it will be and we will be happy. But it's not like BB where he has no incentive to be good other than personal competitiveness. Malone might want to go back to the NBA at some point, or if he gets fired, coach somewhere else. Who knows.

Point is, I view the possibility that he might leave for the NBA as a positive, rather than a negative. It gives him an incentive to put his all into the job. So long as he's not thinking about going back to the NBA in a year or two lol.
BB has incentive cuz his sons are in their late 30's with their professional necks on the line.
