UNC Basketball Possible coaches - UNC hires ex-Nuggets HC Michael Malone

I am definitely coming around on this higher, but it needs to be absolutely not true that Malone was the first person they approached, and it needs to be absolutely true that Tommy Lloyd and Dusty May, then TJ Otzelberger, Ben McCollum, and Mark Byington, in that order, were the first ones approached.
Ben clarified a bit. He said at the start Sullivan asked Malone if was interested and he said no.

Hey, I still maintain SOME healthy skepticism! I'm actually a bit perplexed that we are paying another yet another ball coach a $50 million contract, making him the second highest paid coach in the sport, when he has exactly zero experience coaching this particular sport of college basketball. Wake Forest hired a former Denver Nuggets head coach and it went poorly and they had to fire him. Indiana hired a former New York Knicks head coach and it went poorly and they had to fire him. I desperately hope UNC doesn't find itself in the same position in a few years.

But definitely excited to see this new era of Carolina basketball unfold and will hope for the best until given reason otherwise.
Wake’s Bzeldik was 73-119 in the NBA.

Indiana’s Mike Woodson was 315-365 with the Hawks and Knicks.

Those two are not equivalent to Malone.

Really?

The family has generational wealth.
We're comparing them to Malone though, who is just as wealthy relatively if you are splitting BB's money amongst himself plus the 2 sons.
But moreso you ignored the "professional" word in my post, those sons want to coach in the future and have their own reps to think of, BB feels that.

Correct . Malone had a 56% winning record... not great but not a losing record

A .564 winning percentage in the NBA with that many games coached is actually great. Not top 10 all time or anything — the HoF coaches are 60-70% but there aren’t that many of them. But still impressive.

More impressive, Malone has a .550 winning percentage in the NBA playoffs and an NBA Title.

By comparison, Billy Donovan has a .548 winning percentage in the regular season and .413 in the NBA playoffs (no titles). Of course Donovan has extensive NCAA experience pre-NIL and two NCAA titles. But when he took over OKC, they had a winning record the prior season (45-37). In contrast, Malone took over a Nuggets team with two straight 50+ loss seasons and in need of a rebuild.

Not saying Malone was a home run hire just defending his NBA win %.

All great points! And I’m not putting down Malone or his winning percentage by any means, I don’t want to give that impression. But his win percentage without arguably the best player in the world is about the same as Bill Belichick‘s win percentage without the greatest quarterback in history: around .400. Definitely not intending to seem like I’m putting Malone down, just providing further context for the numbers.

I totally agree that Bzdelik and Mike Woodson aren’t exactly apples to apples comparisons to Michael Malone, but my overarching point is just that having extensive NBA coaching experience – and even going so far as winning an NBA championship – is not necessarily a foolproof guarantee that the same level of success is going to translate to the college game.

I’m definitely excited about Malone, don’t get me wrong. I just feel like it’s also OK to continue to have a little bit of healthy skepticism, at least until we see the full staff and roster come together and perform.

I think you both make really good points. He's certainly no sure thing and it will be interesting to see how he adapts to the college game. I'm cautiously optimistic, but we'll see. I at least feel good about him as a person from his initial press conference and the support of former players.

Totally agree!

Name these guys - some are easier than others.

From left to right: Don’t know, Deon Thompson, Tyler Hansbrough, Eddie Fogler, Marcus Ginyard, Kenny Williams, don’t know, Pat Sullivan, Melvin Scott, not sure but it looks like Ed Davis, Roy Williams, someone behind Malone that I cannot see, Sean May, Eric Hoots.

My guess on guy in the door was Byron Sanders, but you could be right.
