UNC Basketball Possible coaches

Yea
too bad
Lets go hire a freaking up and comer so to speak
Like the next 48 hours lol
If we're not waiting on Billy Donovan and deciding to go the up and comer route, my vote is for Mark Byington. Age and offensive scheme makes this a promising hire. The buyout also makes it a bit riskier than the rest.

I would rather get Byington or McCollum now than Donavan.

If the choice is Byington or Ben McCI would go with Iowa.
His record is more impressivee IMO. Byington went 11-7 in SEC this year but so did Stack in year 4 when Vandy did not have much of a NIL program. Byington has benefitted from the NIL program Stack finally got estabvlhed in his last year there.

Donovan is the "win the press conference" pick. More successful resume, age and being out of the college game are the two dings (and the Roy dustup 20 years ago).

McCollum and Byington is the up and comer route. Think they're both really good coaches. Neither is a sure thing.

Donovan would be a buzz hire just like Belichick was.

God Almighty.

Your brand is still one of the top brands in all of sports. The problem is that you have idiots in charge. (See Belichick, Bill) and they’re putting you in position to be turned down by guys who are using you for a pay raise. That kinda thing dilutes the perception.

IMHO this search should have been conducted differently. Quietly. Preferably by an outside firm with a track record. You want to approach Stevens? Fine, do so through a back channel without all the noise.

Of course the opportunity still exists for you guys to knock it out of the park, and if so all this is forgotten. But leaving Davis twisting in the wind for three days set the stage for how this was going to be handled. It just seems like there is a need for attention as opposed to a need for making the right hire.

Just an opinion from the outside.
There is a private search ongoing (Turnkey) but the reality is that you can’t make inquiries privately. All of these efforts require donor financial commitments, which means donor communications, which means leaks.

And then there is just reality. When you don’t hire a coach after the Elite Eight, it is pretty obvious you are angling for Final Four coaches. Hard to hide that no matter how private you try to be.

The best way to hire is to have a Will Wade deal negotiated in February. The problem here is that UNC was intending to keep Hubert until the very end. So there was no way to get a secret handshake deal in place in February.

i suspect the hire will be made in the next couple of days. Then, like always happens after coach searches, the fanbase will become almost unanimously convinced within a month that we have one of the greatest coaches alive and that we will do great in the coming years.

And then turn on him with the first set of consecutive losses.
If our next coac loses more than 2 games a row, I going to go find that Effigy place where they hanged Dean Smith (I’m sure glad Billy Cunningham cut him down and he was okay after that) and send that coach an invitation to meet me there.

Pretty sure the effigy place is outside of Woolen Gym.

BD is not BB.

Not saying I wanted this from the start, but c'mon people-- Billy Donovan has forgotten more about basketball than the collective basketball knowledge of this board. (Apologies for the horrible cliche, but...)

Simple fact is that he is a Rick Patino protégé that has a better record of winning in both the NBA and college than Rick himself.

I have no doubt that he could win big here with the requisite financial support. If BD is what it takes to get that level of support, then so be it and I think we have 8 yrs or so of a top college basketball program.

While I would love a "20 yr coach", given the crazy shifting nature of this college sports world, I would also love a great "5 to 10 yr coach" bc not sure how anyone can even pretend to predict past that... and I 100% think Billy Donovan provides a pretty elevated floor for any UNC team he would coach
