UNC Basketball Possible coaches

Make a run at Billy Donovan and see if he's really set on waiting till April 12th - even then perhaps you can announce it that he's coming after he finishes the season with the Bulls

And then there is just reality. When you don’t hire a coach after the Elite Eight, it is pretty obvious you are angling for Final Four coaches. Hard to hide that no matter how private you try to be.

The best way to hire is to have a Will Wade deal negotiated in February. The problem here is that UNC was intending to keep Hubert until the very end. So there was no way to get a secret handshake deal in place in February.

i suspect the hire will be made in the next couple of days. Then, like always happens after coach searches, the fanbase will become almost unanimously convinced within a month that we have one of the greatest coaches alive and that we will do great in the coming years.

You don’t have to put up with leaks. Make the right hire and the money will be there.
 
Also: I have no problem with Donovan. And I have no problem with Donovan finishing out his season with the Bulls. What I do have a problem with is what IC has reported: that Donovan won't even start negotiations until April 12. That is a big problem, and suggests that Donovan is just buying time until he understands what pro jobs may be available to him.

IMO we need to progress with Byington/McCollum/McCasland, whoever we prefer and can make headway with. And be in position to tell Donovan by midweek: we like you, and you can finish your season, but we need an answer now or we're going to have to go a different direction.

This... he can lame duck the last few games with a lottery bound tanking team and still let his next move be known (awkward as would be)

Totally agree -- if he can't 'shit or get off the pot' at this point then we need to 100% move on. It really comes down to if BD wants this job or not, show time if so
 
Yeah, I don't like the idea of having to wait a week before BD would even begin to start talking with us. I do think he'd be a much less risky hire than Byington, McCollum or McCasland. Whoever the hire is will need to get donors back on board and invest into the roster. It will be much easier, imo, for the donors to feel confident in backing BD than an up and comer. And, without talent, winning at the levels that we should is going to be hard, even with a good coach. (I also think BD is a good coach.)

Damn, I so wish Lloyd would have worked out.

Who knows on Lloyd. He may have already hit his high water mark.
 
I don't see a lot of evidence that good planning went into the transition. I don't know for sure that it didn't either. But this decision to start over was very much a snap decision - it wasn't made until after we lost in the tourney, so there is only so much planning that could have gone into it. I do wonder if the better approach would have been to give Coach Davis clear goals that had to be hit next season and spend the year planning for the transition if we thought he wasn't going to meet them. If next year is a write-off anyways, I think I would rather have used it to have months to figure out next steps instead of weeks. If all our big targets are existing good coaches, than beginning those conversations in the off-season (and not during the tournament) might have been the better option. I want us to come out of this with a homerun hire, but I don't have a lot of confidence that will happen.

I don't think they were planning to transition from Hubert, but his performance over the last few games made retaining him impossible.

The word was that the donors would not fund nil for next year if Davis remained.
