For my own sanity, I’m going to just assume that the report about Lombardi going to Saudi Arabia to seek money is fake news until we hear otherwise. Not to try to sound dramatic, and not that one single solitary person at UNC should give a damn what I think because I am truly a nobody, but I think that UNC seeking financial investment from Saudi A-fucking-rabia would pretty much be the end of my relationship with the University.

You might be surprised by transfer class size of top football schools. Alabama, Texas, Ohio State, Oregon, Penn St and Notre Dame had 12 or fewer 2025 incoming transfers. They are still centered on building their team through high school recruiting.
That’s actually really great to know, and that does surprise me- I would have thought that the portal classes were bigger than that. My concern for UNC specifically is that we are almost certain to have a ton of attrition yet again this off-season, and I don’t think that we have the luxury of being able to groom 40-person high school recruiting classes for the 2-3 years that is necessary for the vast majority of them to become significant collegiate contributors- and that’s assuming that the majority of them would even wait around for two or three years.

Oh, I completely agree with you. For me, I feel like they're in the position you and I (and others) were last year about half-way through the basketball season. It became clear to us that HD was not right for the position. We pointed that out, we posted articles and podcasts that pointed that out, and so on. However, we also cheered when HD/staff had successes - we didn't only focus on the negatives, because above all we wanted UNC to improve and win and were delighted when they showed signs of that.

What I'm saying is it's odd to me, at least, how some folks here will only post negatives, while also say that they want UNC's football team/program to improve this year. It's clear that the traffic on this thread is highly correlated to the level of shit-show we see on the field.

I will fully admit that, as an odd person, I do on occasion misread situations. To me, the read of the thread is that many folks would prefer UNC gets humiliated until BB is fired. That is fine if that's your stance. But then, you really don't want to see them succeed with him as the coach.

Just my opinion, and I'll get off my soapbox now.
I will say, just from my own personal vantage point (and certainly not wanting to speak for anyone else here), my complaining is because I sincerely, truly do not see any positives on the field. Like, not a single one. I know that my general demeanor on the current UNC Football situation is pretty sour on this thread, but in general I am a highly optimistic, glass half full person. I would absolutely be willing to highlight positives if I thought I saw any, but I truly do not. And the only reason I do not highlight the positives in recruiting is because I sincerely do not follow recruiting at all anymore, so the only way that I even know about recruiting happenings is if other people happen to post it on this thread.

High school recruiting is still the best way to build a program. The heavy hitters still operate that way, and then just use the portal to plug holes here and there. For the most part though their best players are all guys that they recruited. It takes several seasons of stacking good recruiting classes together to see it pay off though.

If the roster bottoms out like ours did at the end under Mack then your only option is to go heavy on the portal for a few seasons while rebuilding the HS pipeline. Lombardi trying to double the size of the HS class to jump start things next season (which is what he laid out in his ridiculous email) isn’t a realistic strategy imo. If we want to be good next season then most of our contributors will have to come through the portal.

I totally get this. And, given that I'm one of the few seeing it, I'm probably off about seeing improvement (albeit small).

Journo School probably isn't happy, but is Steve Newmark okay with it?

I hope like hell he’s not. If we- and by we, I mean college sports collectively, not just UNC- are in such desperate need of cash that we’re willing to whore out for blood money from people who sponsor terrorism, assassinations, and human rights violations, we have completely lost the plot and I want absolutely, positively nothing to do with it any longer. I may be in a minority among broader college sports fans with that opinion but I’m fine with that – clearly I do not want to win nearly badly enough.

So I’m guessing you didn’t go to the Riyadh Comedy Festival?
