Pete Davidson going there when his dad was killed on 9/11 is all kinds of gross. I used to be a big fan of Chappelle, but he just seems to be about making money now and being more controversial than funny since he came back to stand-up.

IC has reconfirmed that this meeting was with an individual potentially making a donation -- not the Saudi investment fund. They're saying the Athletic story is wrong. Good to hear.

Ouch. IC was initially reporting that this meeting was with an individual prospective donor. Now the NYT is saying it was with the Saudi gov't for their Public Investment Fund. A little bit of a difference there.
IC reaffirmed that reporting tonight. Said it was an individual donor, not an investment and not the country.

I hope like hell he’s not. If we- and by we, I mean college sports collectively, not just UNC- are in such desperate need of cash that we’re willing to whore out for blood money from people who sponsor terrorism, assassinations, and human rights violations, we have completely lost the plot and I want absolutely, positively nothing to do with it any longer. I may be in a minority among broader college sports fans with that opinion but I’m fine with that – clearly I do not want to win nearly badly enough.
There are some equally awful americans in the world that college sports teams would gladly accept money from. It sucks.

It’s kind of funny, the impression that I got from the reporting I read, I never thought that Lombardi was meeting with the actual PIF. I always assumed it was with member(s) of the Saudi royal family- and now that UNC has confirmed that no meeting with the PIF took place, is even more highly probable- which is still just as damning, if not more so, in my book. I think one would have to be extremely gullible to believe that there is some pure, altruistic motive behind an ultra wealthy anonymous individual in Saudi Arabia specifically seeking out Mike Lombardi/Bill Belichick because they are just dying to invest in a historically pedestrian college football program.

Precisely. Any meeting which requires a trip to Saudi Arabia to solicit funding is something I want absolutely no part of in any way in my life. They need to find enough funding to replace mine (which isnt much).

Then go to the equally awful Americans and be transparent. Dont go to the folks who murdered thousands of Americans on American soil and who would do so again tomorrow if they felt like it.

Ones whose dismemberment by bone saw of a respected journalist whose coverage of them they didn't like is literally recorded on tape?

GTFOOH

Might be worth waiting a beat to get the truth of this situation.
This is probably fair. I’ve been pretty reactionary and negative about this situation in general and last night was bad, I’m sick, Mariners blowing the ALCS and there was a shooting at Als on Franklin and that was our backup dinner option so that threw me a little off
I still think going to Saudi Arabia at all is stupid

Interesting choice of words from UNC PR that the individual is a “college football fan” … not “a UNC fan.” To me, that is a massive difference. Is the individual simply looking for a team to invest in / become an equity partner? And it doesn’t matter who it is - as long as the ROI is there? It doesn’t sound like this is a Tar Heel fan looking to support his team.

Precious little do I know about how fundraising works, but just spitballing here, perhaps we should consider going after our own UNC alum billionaires (one of whom, believe it or not, is one of the most famous sports figures in the history of the planet!) instead of begging for money from people who sponsor terrorist attacks on American soil, the dismemberment of American citizens by bonesaw, things of that general nature.

Look, I want UNC Football to win, but not that badly, and not badly enough for the continued ridicule and humiliation that the current leadership of the program is bringing upon us on a daily basis. Hopefully we get a win tonight to calm the storm, however temporarily.
