Opening play as bad as the ending. Everything in between looked like a maybe like slightly improved team, but maybe just a bad opponent.

There's still bad play-calling, we're still slow, and a few odd coaching moves (why no punt returns?), but something standing out is that this doesn't look like a team that has given up. It doesn't look like "bb has lost the locker room".

It’s some improvement AND Cal is not a good P4 team…..wouldn’t be a good G5 team.
They beat Minnesota by two TDs who just beat top 25 Nebraska and is 5-2. Cal’s two losses are to 5-1 SDSU and 4-2 Duke.

So Cal is not terrible. They are about UCF level.

Winning or losing this game doesn’t mean much in the grand thing of things. Looking competitive in a road game against a P4 team is something.

Past is not prologue. Perhaps we can turn things around a bit and get some positive mojo going.

Stanford, Wake and State are winnable. Duke, Syracuse and Virginia are probably not.

UCF is 58th in SP+, Cal is 78th. they're worse than UCF by a measure and that hot start looks like an anomaly caused by a freshman QB that opponents weren't prepared for. SDSU and Duke are both pretty mediocre teams.

They are both massively better than us.

Is it me or did our offensive play-calling look less horrific?
The offensive line looked the best it had looked all year (save Richmond). That may have something to do with Cal’s poor D-line.

That made the offense look more competent because our run game improved to average.

Well, shit. My first "home game" (been here since 2010) and I thought I was brining the good vibes, and luck, at least enough to get the w. But, looks like I brought the same good vibes and luck that I did way back in 1997 for the Miami Oh game. All in all, they looked to have improved measurably. Hopefully it will continue as the season progresses. Having said that, I knew JKS was good, but I've never really seen him play. I can see why he gets a ton of hype.

Fumbles were a 14 point swing. First fumble set Cal up with a short field that they converted for a TD. Second fumble takes a UNC TD off the board.

Given the way the D played on that last drive, I would not have been surprised to see Cal march down the field for a winning TD. That would have been an even more deflating loss.
