i think this is massively jumping the gun of optimism. "i see reason to give year 2" is a reasonable statement. moving all the way from that to "they should get year 2" is ludicrous. Lombardi in particular needs to go. he's done nothing to prove he should even be on staff, let alone the highest paid GM in the sport. That being said, and as much as I still do not believe that this whole Belichick thing is going to work in the grand scheme, I can admit that I now see reason to give year 2 when I absolutely saw zero reason to do so after the Clemson game. It is going to require us to strike gold – I mean absolutely strike gold – in the transfer portal and especially at the quarterback position, and I most definitely believe the jury is still out on Lombardi and Belichick’s ability to put together a good collegiate roster, but at least as of right this moment – and certainly I reserve the right to change my mind after seeing the rest of the season play out – but as of right now they should get year two. And I’ll certainly be hoping it works out well.
as you noted, there were still tons of signs that this is a poorly coached team. i disagree heavily that "the jury is out" on their ability to scout talent and put together a roster - it is in, and they suck at it. Gio Lopez is still playing quarterback in a lost season, players are getting manufactured touches who don't particularly deserve them, and the recruiting strategy continues to be "don't do any evaluations and just see who sticks to the wall."
