UNC Football Catch-all | Bill Belichick Era underway

I'll confess that a not-insignificant part of my frustration with this whole ordeal is probably irrationally rooted in the fact that Carolina Football in general has broken my sports soul and I just come to expect that if the absolute worst can happen to Carolina Football, the absolute worst *will* happen to Carolina Football. So it's entirely possible I'm overreacting to it. I just want us to be good in football one damn time.

Especially one who apparently now sees herself as his publicity/public relations manager. I wonder if that is the "professional" side of their relationship that Belichick was talking about. His private life is his business, but if they're going to keep doing interviews like this then the reality is that it's going to be everybody's business in this social media age. As I posted earlier, the sooner that the football season starts and people can focus on what's happening on the field, the better.

Yeah, it's not so much that she's his girlfriend that's the problem, it's all the other things he's letting her do/claim to be.

Tell you what -- the Mack teams of the mid 1990s were FUN. You were probably too young then?

Yeah, I was born in the 90's so those Mack Brown 1.0 teams were way before my time as a fan. My first years as a Carolina football fan were the John Bunting years.

That sucks. I came of age in late Dooley, early Crum, when we had Famous Amos and Kelvin Bryant and won 4 straight bowl games -- back when bowl wins mattered. The 1979 Gator Bowl win against Michigan was very fun, especially because that team was about a year away from peaking. The 1980 Blue Bonnet bowl win against Texas was amazing, especially when Lawrence Taylor ran down the Texas WR from 50 yards away. The 81 Gator Bowl in the fog against Lou Holtz and Arkansas was great, although I am still not quite sure if I saw any of the actual game, even after watching it again when I got home on a new fangled device called a VCR. And the 82 Sun (Snow) Bowl win over Texas was pretty great, too, although I almost got hypothermia in the 3rd Q. Went to all of those games. It wouldn't be until the 92-93 Peach Bowl against Miss St. before we finally won another bowl game.

Had no idea that such dominance was not a regular occurrence for UNC football. That was also when UNC basketball had Michael Jordan and UNC lacrosse was dominating the sport. That was a good time to get hooked on UNC athletics.
 
Create a situation where you have a legendary NFL coach in his twilight years dating a pretty young woman a half-century his junior, have them give a disastrous public interview on national television in which she appears controlling and somewhat unhinged, and have this coach now working at a highly respected, nationally-recognized university with a powerful name brand, a huge fan base and proven ability to attract good ratings whenever they're shown or even just discussed on television and social media, and in this social media age you're going to end up with a shitstorm like this.

UNC has been a favorite negative target of the state and national news media ever since the NCAA scandal broke - part of the appeal to the N&O and other assorted hangers-on was that if they could bring down UNC athletics it would cement their own fame and reputation forever. They weren't able to do it, but ever since it does seem as if much of the sports and news media just loves reporting on anything negative they can find about UNC athletics, largely because of a perception among some that UNC has always been arrogant and self-righteous and hypocritical in claiming that UNC athletics is different from most other college sports programs and didn't cheat or pay players and had (until the NCAA scandal) a mostly spotless reputation, at least since Coach Smith was hired in 1961. And unfortunately Belichick and his girlfriend have provided the media with the perfect opportunity to slam both them and UNC all over again. In the grand scheme of things it's a trivial story, but hopefully when the college football season starts media interest in this rather odd couple will die down and at least the sports media will start focusing on the games and his on-field coaching and not his private life.

She is apparently inserting herself into every aspect of the football program. For what it's worth, she's also apparently made an enemy of quite literally EVERYONE within the university with which she has had any contact.

Shes Dawn Bunting x100 and Dawn was a huge reason for Bunting's blind spots and failures.

If it is true that they met on a plane on the way to Palm Beach in 2021, I can't fathom why that would have been such a difficult answer. It also doesn't explain why TMZ's sources at CBS apparently leaked that she held up the interview multiple times, including once for over half an hour because she stormed out.

This ain't Belichick's first rodeo with the media, but it certainly is Hudson's. And she has completely failed herself, her boyfriend, and now her boyfriend's employer very publicly by allowing what should be a non-issue (assuming they met on a plane as they claim) explode into a public relations spectacle.

UNC is now getting dragged by quite literally every single prominent media source- sports and non-sports alike- that I've seen. Maybe it will blow over quickly, maybe it won't. Belichick hasn't exactly endeared himself to anyone in the media over the last 2 decades, and the media buys ink by the barrel. It has already become a feeding frenzy that has garnered far more attention than any of us should want on UNC or our football program for what are completely non-football related reasons. What happens if some enterprising investigative journalist successfully uncovers the fact that they did not in fact meet on a plane to Palm Beach in 2021, but that they met on a sugar daddy site or she was a high-end escort or something? That is not at all out of the realm of possibility at this point.

I truly don't care with whom, what, and how Belichick is getting his rocks off these days, but I do care that the person with whom he is doing so is creating tons of headaches, negative publicity, and possibly worse for UNC.
