Our record against State since 2000 is extremely frustrating, but not all that surprising, given how much State hates us and pretty much bases their entire football season around whether they beat us or not. And Doeren knows that beating UNC is the key to keeping his job and plans accordingly - he probably starts planning for the UNC game at the start of the season, and they usually play their best game of the season against us, even when they're not having a good or even decent season overall. Having said that, it's still frustrating that we usually haven't been able to rise to the occasion and answer in kind.

I always got the impression that Butch Davis and Mack Brown (at least in his second tenure here) just never cared about the rivalry and never really treated the State game as any different from any other game (Mack did seem to get fired up for the dook game, but not State), and Fedora was 3-4. Ironically it was John Bunting, a UNC grad and former UNC player, who really seemed to get the State rivalry more than any coach over the past quarter-century. I guess we'll see tomorrow if Belichick treats it as a rivalry game or as just another game on the schedule.
we were favored to win in most of those games vs state which adds to the frustration. fuck state

Beating a 6-5 ncsulol (which means it finishes 6-6) doesn’t improve UNC’s 2025 season grade from a D to an F.

5-7 against this schedule is an F.

Losing a majority of one’s games against this schedule is a FAILURE.
Okay D- minus then.

Beating those asshats is worth 1/2 a grade to me.

This game won’t really change anything about how I feel about Belichick’s chances of succeeding here long term, but a win would definitely make it easier to accept the fact that we’re going to have to sit through another season of him next year.

I’m fully expecting the team to roll over and get blown out though. Think the team spent their last bullet trying to beat Dook at home, now it just feels like everyone is on to the off-season focused on what recruits and transfer portal players we’re targeting. A humiliating loss to State where the players and coaches all look mentally checked out would be a very fitting way for this pathetic season to end.

Went to a store yesterday that we do at often. The folks who work there are pretty avid sports fans and know we are as well. They know we are Heels fans. All were asking yesterday what i thought of the game today and my honest answer was "nothing at all". I doubt I even watch and I am totally ok with that. Whatever it says about me aside, if much of that filters into the other people like me, Carolina has a major issue.

Just like when the basketball team is not winning, I’m still going to watch. Regardless of how one feels about the coaches or if the team is winning or losing, those kids bust their ass every single day to get better. I am going to watch for them/support them, and if I can’t be there in person then I will be there behind a tv screen. (Yes, I know it can sound corny to some people, but I don’t care - I am a fan of those players and I appreciate them for what they do and go through in order to succeed.)

This game has zero juice outside of State’s fan base and maybe a small chunk of our fan base. I listened to several CFB podcasts earlier in the week that were previewing this weekend’s slate, and it barely even got a footnote mention lol.

Exactly. And if that sounds corny to someone then they need to look in mirror.

Has zilch to do with winning and losing for me. If it did, I would have stopped watching UNC football long ago.

Tell that to my partner. They cannot understand why I can let something as insignificant as sports affect my mood for the rest of the day/evening into the next. Sometimes I wonder if I have too much emotional connection to UNC, like a really unhealthy amount - basketball in particular.

It will wane with age. I am 68. I used to be affected for days. I recover more quickly. Lol. But I am like you. I just want something good to happen for these kids who do the work. Team is not good but is also snakebit. Bad combo.

I used to have an unhealthy obsession with UNC sports but the NIL era has pretty much killed that off. I actually haven't watched one football or basketball game yet and don't care if I do. If I'm in the car I'll listen on SirusXM but I'm not gonna pay for a live tv stream to watch and don't feel like spending $ at a bar to watch either. 10 years ago I never thought I'd feel this way but here we are.

I hope all the teams do well and win but I no longer care whether they do.

Yep the wife and I are going to Playmaker’s while the game is on. I might record it but I doubt it will be worth watching.

Wife was going to get us and my stepdaughter and boyfriend tickets to the State parents week game a few weeks ago since she is set to grad from State in the spring. But due to other conflicts, decided to buy us tickets to tonight's game for my birthday instead.(gee, thanks honey). Not feeling confident at all, but hopefully a win under freezing conditions will salvage our disappointing season a little and piss off donut dave.
