So back to UNC football - it does look like we got a good recruiting class - I just hope we do good in the portal as well
We did. Credit to the staff, they executed their strategy- deploying an inordinate amount of financial resources to build a super sized high school class- to perfection. It remains to be seen whether that strategy was the right strategy, but it was definitely a strategy and they definitely executed it. Now it’s going to be fascinating to watch what unfolds after this because either we are not going to have the roster space (not to mention the financial resources) to maneuver in the transfer portal, or we are going to have to put half of the current roster on the waiver wire and essentially have yet another entire brand new team next year comprising of 40 high school kids and a bunch of one-year portal rentals. Let’s hope it works out.

I hope we are selective in the portal - would rather we spend money on a few talented players in select positions (QB, RB, WR, CB) than bring in 20+ guys. I'm hoping that we can get some valuable snaps from a freshman on the DL next year (specifically DTs Cleveland, Ruffin, and Moala).

Definitely understand that thought process, but we are going to have to spend a lot of money in the portal no matter what solely by virtue of needing to replace our entire starting OL. Those guys are among the most expensive on the market, aside from a truly elite game changer quarterback type, and we need somewhere between 3-5 of them. I’d say we don’t really need to spend on RB or WR unless we lose June and Shipp. Bill’s RB-by-committee approach apparently doesn’t have a need or a desire for a bell cow, and decent WR are generally a dime a dozen.

I’m also really concerned about how we are planning to approach the QB situation. Clearly the staff does not believe that Newkirk or Baker can get the job done- their stubborn refusal to play either one of those guys at all is a telltale. Burgess will be coming off of ACL rehab and won’t be able to participate in spring ball, and anyway it is probably not in our best interest to be trotting out an 18-year-old freshman quarterback in a must-win year, IMO. But true game changing, instant impact type quarterbacks are either going to be exorbitantly expensive, or not available (retained by their current team). I’m truly intrigued to see what our plan is because without some sort of major upgrade at the quarterback position next season, everything else is moot.

That and he knows that if he talks trash and insults us after they win it will thrill their fan base even more and make them even more pleased with him. We've become his ticket to job security at NC State. It's not just that they've been regularly beating us, it's his very vocal rubbing it in and trash talk that really wins that fan base over.

ETA: At least State just lost their third basketball game tonight out of their last four, so ncstatelols are still very much alive.
He and Boo Corrigan are training the new hoops coach too

I admit I would feel better about our recruiting strategy if our Coach was 53 instead of 73

Lol. On what planet is Dave Doeren being “cancelled” by folks simply pointing out that he is an insufferable asshole who also happens to own our asses on the football field? Good Lord. If that is “canceling” someone – pointing out that they are a jerk who dominates their hapless rival, then cancel me harder, daddy!
Hating is not pointing out. Telling the truth is not being a jerk. You make my point. Pathetic cancel culture.

Honestly, me too. I really would. I know it probably comes across that I have a personal vendetta against Bill Belichick but I really don't. I had almost verbatim the exact same complaints, frustrations, and disagreement with Mack Brown: lost his fastball, not nearly as sharp and organized as he once was, team plays sloppy and undisciplined, wasn't a threat to be hired by literally anyone else, makes questionable staff hires, teams come out flat and uninspired, etc. If this thread had been around during Mack 2.0 I'd have been saying the exact same things I've been saying about Belichick.

If Belichick were 10 or 20 years younger, and we were getting him in his prime, it'd be a lot different. Same with Mack Brown 2.0. If we'd hired him 10 years younger, he'd have been a fantastic hire. A major source of my frustration about this whole Belichick thing is not that I have some intense personal dislike of Belichick, but rather that I'm annoyed that we literally did this exact same experiment for the immediate 6 years before, and it failed. It's just really mind-blowing that the University and its decision-makers decided to double down on their stupidity- and that is the source of almost all of my annoyance. It's the whole "fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me" thing. UNC allowed itself to get fooled twice.

I just assume all the best players will leave and Carolina will pay more for players to transfer in that other programs are not willing to pay as much.

FWIW I thought Simpson was our best LB. Obviously wish House would stick around though.

I’m no football expert, but I didn’t think House was “elite,” this year, and I don’t think he would play a ton on an elite defense. Beau Atkinson transferred to OSU and barely saw the field for them this year. In hindsight he clearly made a mistake.
