FWIW I thought Simpson was our best LB. Obviously wish House would stick around though.

I’m no football expert, but I didn’t think House was “elite,” this year, and I don’t think he would play a ton on an elite defense. Beau Atkinson transferred to OSU and barely saw the field for them this year. In hindsight he clearly made a mistake.
I think deeming a player made a mistake transferring depends on why the player leaves. If his goal was to be a part of a team that has a chance to win a championship then he did not make a mistake leaving. If his goal was to get more snaps, then I agree with you. It really is goal-dependent.

True. I had assumed he was trying to make it to the NFL, so going from 7.5 sacks (UNC) to only getting 1 (OSU) seems to have derailed any shot at the NFL.

Certainly we are getting news about Kitchens in the next few days right? If they run it back with him next season the charade is over.
I would assume after the early signing period ends. Though, imo, anyone we’re signing that would not sign if Freddie Kitchens was fired should not be someone we want anyway

That's embarrassing for the staff.
Because they didn't develop him into a more impactful player? Did they ever say he was going to be a stud?

Do we know if he was paid more than the typical starting LB? If he was paid a bunch, then his on-field numbers are probably more embarrassing than the fact that he's leaving for greener pastures.

More problematic would be over-paying to keep him. House's PFF numbers were bad, despite leading the team in starts. And if the coaches are completely honest then they are telling him his starting spot isn't guaranteed. I hoped he'd stay and play 2nd-string.

If the goal was a sideline pass to watch the OSU/Michigan game, Atkinson clearly made the right decision.

A sideline pass and a giant paycheck. I have trouble faulting any player for leaving due to playtime OR $ OR powerhouses. UNC is a middling program in a middling conference. If House or Beau left because we couldn't beat instate rivals, then that is embarrassing, but otherwise...

I'd love for Beau and House to both come back.

House played more defensive snaps than anyone else on UNC’s defense. He also led the team in tackles.

just reiterating how incompetent things were this year. Not sure why we’re pretending they’re just magically going to do everything correct this year
Yeah. In my view, there's quite literally only one thing that this staff has done well since they've been here for almost a full year now: spend copious amounts of money on high school kids. They haven't coached well, schemed well, game-planned well, or fit their scheme and play calling to their offensive personnel well. They haven't cleaned up the sloppiness, the occasional general disinterest and uninspired play, or the loss of discipline leading to penalties that plagued us under the previous staff. They haven't managed games well. It's certainly within the realm of possibility that they might be able to learn from their mistakes, course correct, and put a much better product on the field next year. But they've got quite a steep uphill climb.

What does this have to do with the reasons for why he's leaving or what the coaches said or did? Despite playing all those snaps and leading the team in tackles his PFF grade was in the upper 50's which is bad. But who else were we going to play? IMO he needed backups to give him some breathers... it is bad that we didn't have enough quality backup LBs to rest House a bit.

Did House say he's leaving cuz he doesn't like the coaches or Jordon or something? Or is it possible the coaches just aren't paying him a premium giving his so-so on-field performance? I hoped he'd grow a bit, add another 10 pounds, maybe they did too... who knows, but he might not be best suited for our WLB starting minutes next yr.

Wonder if he’ll think that when the season ends with Big Ten and National Champion rings. I bet not.

I hate doing this. Is it really an argument that it hurt/destroyed his NFL stock to only play garbage minutes with dramatically decreased production?
NFL drafts off measurables not production. If he tests well at combine, he will be drafted. If not, he won’t. Sacks at OSU not really relevant.
