Why is losing someone who was expensive and not very good a bad thing? Seems like a positive as it would clear up funds to go after someone who will hopefully end up being better (and maybe cheaper).
Oh sure
A Big IF about replacing such a guy in the portal-and we neeeed OL guys so badly Tough to lose one
It may all work out

Yeah I can't say I trust the coaching staff/GM to find competent OL help, but not sure how losing McVay is that bad of a thing.

i think it’s just more signs of their scouting incompetence that were supposed to just magically believe is better now that “they understand college football”

Four OLs currently in the portal (Boone, Norwood and Green the other three) and the guys who started most of the game are all eligibility. OL looking like a big question mark at the moment.

He has a better record against Top 10 and Top 25 opponents than Franklin, so that's already a plus in his favor for Penn State.
Franklin was playing OSU at PSU (and Bama before that at Vandy). When he played Utah-type teams at PSU, he crushed it. See 2023 Rose Bowl.

Not all top-10 and top-25 teams are created equal. Franklin tended to struggle with the elite of the elite and Campbell rarely played that level team.

That's a good point, we have no idea what he was expecting money-wise. If he is very expensive to keep, then yeah, might as well find someone better value.

Next year will be the last of this experiment. We cant add 70 players every year and expect to compete
I don't think that is the plan. It is counterintuitive for a 73 year old but they are attempting to build a foundation through recruiting. ESPN had our class ranked 12th. We have some young stud QBs. We definitely have big holes to plug in portal. But it's clear they want to bring in this class and keep them around. BTW I don't think it will be 70 this year but still a lot. I don't know if this approach will work or not. But if they can assemble this class after 4-8 and all that comes with it if we can show improvement on field I could see another really strong class stacked on this one.

I think counterintuitive is a lesser word than I would use. There is no way Belichick will be around to coach those kids to meaningful snaps. They are 3-4 years away.

I understand. If he leaves in 3 or 4 years with similar classes stacked and good retention, great. Maybe he thinks he can coach until he is 80. Maybe the plan is to stock up talent and hand off to Steve and hang around KFC as an advisor. I just want to see us get better players.
