Regarding Campbell, I think I remember that he wasn’t going to move until after their season was over, which means you don’t really get a chance to recruit. See Penn States class this year with like 3 commits. And now he has to assemble a staff and put a portal class together in like 3 weeks. It can be done, but seems exceedingly difficult.
I *think* it was that he wasn't willing to formally talk to us until after the conference championship they were in against Arizona State on Dec. 4. But then when they lost that game to ASU, he was open to talking to us until it became clear that the UNC BOT was running their own search. Whether he would have actually come to UNC or not is definitely a different question, since other teams had previously tried to lure him out of Ames and he didn't bite.

How much of a staff does Matt Campbell have to put together?

He was head coach at Iowa State. He has a staff. Most of the assistant coaches and other staffers at Iowa State will follow Campbell to Penn State.

I thought Rees was his top target?

Greg pointed out, back during the hiring process, that he didn't think UNC would've invested nearly as much into the program for either of them....or really anyone outside of BB. If that means they continue investing the same going forward then I'd say it will (probably) turn out better in the long-run.
Tommy Rees and Jeff Monken only became Bubba's top targets once Jon Sumrall and Matt Campbell told us that they weren't interested in talking to us anymore, once they learned of the BOT's one-man search.

It's probably true, though, that UNC wouldn't have received the same level of institutional financial investment in any of those candidates like they did with Belichick, which is something I've complained about since the coaching search last year, is a direct indictment of the University's lack of seriousness about its football program- that our big hitters won't support the program unless we agree to hire their old golfing buddies and/or celebrities.

Yep. I feel extremely confident that Penn State with their first year coach will win more games than North Carolina will win next year with our second year coach. We are still apparently trying to reinvent the college football wheel here, while Matt Campbell is likely to be able to transition relatively easily into that role at Penn State. They will have a temporary one-year recruiting blip this year, almost certainly, but they'll get that ship righted very quickly. Campbell is an overall upgrade from James Franklin, and probably the only such realistic coach that they could have hired who could be considered such.

My candidates to see early PT (coming from someone who is far from an expert):
- DTs Vodney Cleveland or Viliami Moala - we played fine on the DL this year, but need more beef in the middle
- LBs Calvin Thomas or DQ Forkpa - not a ton coming back, and both have good size/speed
- WR Carnell Warren (Keeyun Chapman is higher ranked, but some speculation he will add weight and convert to TE)
- OL Da'Ron Parks - gotta replace a ton on the OL and seems easier to play early as a guard
- OL Jonah Rodriguez - see above, plus he is older and has experience at least practicing against college kids
- K David Green and P Adam Gibbs - kinda cheating with this guess
Apparently Vodney Cleveland is young for his class "Tracking to start college before his 18th birthday\". If he's physically ready already it will be a tiny bit surprising.

This staff wasn't afraid to play rookies. Eidan Buchanan* started! DL frosh like Devin Ancrum, Giddens and Nico got onto the field in early games. Madrid Tucker, Shenard Clower, June all played a ton. Frosh safety Javion Butts got some meaningful snaps eventually, so the coaches aren't afraid to play young guys.

It actually speaks volumes about the true frosh or other young backsups who didn't see the field. Our LB backups must be really bad.

My candidates are at the skills positions because of the massive quantity of secondary and wr we brought in, and the need for more speed on the field.

* Eidan Buchanan started and looked really bad technique-wise. Then after the second game he never played again - even with Boone injured, Hall getting dinged-up, etc. Mystery decision to put him out there in the first place, real head-scratcher, esp given we never saw him again without him being on the injured report.

I hope the investment continues. My sense is the opposite. I think they have sufficiently alienated everyone with a big checkbook on the athletics side. The folks who drove this on the academic side will likely abandon it as quickly as they jumped in. That will leave the football program with a gaping wound of lost financial support.

Hopefully you're wrong...but I can totally see it playing out like you describe :(

That’s the thing when you hire a snake oil salesman/grifter. Much harder to get continued donations after someone like that.

So Greg barnes et all reporting..in a nutshell
Players having individual meetings this week
12 have entered the portal after the meetings
Expect 20-25 more
Question
In the portal can we upgrade all these empty spots? Honestly I don't think we -or even TOSU-can ... I mean very few of our huge Freshmen class will start or even contribute much

At the moment we have more players booked for 2026 than are allowed. Hopefully the vast majority of those who leave are guys who wouldn’t have been on the field anyway, but that remains to be seen.

I'd prefer wins over future investments. We better be ballers going forward to make up for this disaster of a season. I know Greg advocates that theory but SEC membership would have forced our hands on investment with or without this disaster of a season.

Well, our roster has nine former walkons who didn't play much:
DJ Mazzone, QB
Andres Miyares, QB
Jermaine Anderson DB
Henry Martello, RB
Graham Reintjes DB
Reggie Love DB
Cort Halsey, TE
Deems May
Bo Burkes, OL.

But if 11 others left i think it depends which 11.

This 11 wouldn't be a big deal IMO, unless they were special teams aces. Random list btw.
Charleston French, RB
Ty Adams DB
Daniel Anderson, DL
Jonathan Agumadu, LB
Lantz Pascal LB
Evan Bennet LB
Jaylon Nichols, RB
Jo Jo Troupe, RB
Nicco Maggio, DL
Peter Pesansky OL/DL
Adrian Wilson WR

I am not at all sure that is true. Time will tell.
Yeah. He may not ultimately be a better recruiter than Franklin but he is almost certainly a better gameday coach than Franklin. He has a better record against Top 10 and Top 25 opponents than Franklin, so that's already a plus in his favor for Penn State.

Jarvious Green , Miles Mcvay-not in a category of "we needed to leave " And that's just the last couple hours-as you know

I think they are likely similar coaches, in floor/ceiling if not style.

I think that Campbell has a fairly high floor, as did Franklin, but I'm not sure his ceiling is any higher.

But, given where we are in the coaching carousel, Campbell is a great hire by PSU (and much better than I was hoping they'd get).

they were looking at Terry smith or Brian Daboll otherwise, it’s a massive win for them

Losing Mcvay is bad, really bad, guys like that are expensive even if he wasn't that good. But Green kinda lost PT to Madrid Tucker and Clower... I see a guy like CJ Sadler jumping him for minutes.

Why is losing someone who was expensive and not very good a bad thing? Seems like a positive as it would clear up funds to go after someone who will hopefully end up being better (and maybe cheaper).
