It was worse than I thought. I was secretly wishing Dabo would've scored 80 to begin the ending of this nightmare. I'm sick that NCSU and dook will destroy this team which is a bottom feeder in terms of talent and coaching.
The last thing Dabo wants is to help run incompetent staffs out of other ACC schools. He’s very happy recruiting the Charlotte area against Mike Lombardy.

The odds of HD turning it around are about 100x greater than BB. HD actually cares and wants to win. Belichick doesnt give a rat's ass.
This is a really good point. I think that is 100% true. Hubert is a Carolina alum, a die hard Tar Heel through and through to the deepest fibers of his soul, and a disciple of Dean Smith and Roy Williams. Whether he is or is not the best college basketball head coach, and whether or not he ultimately succeeds here enough to retain his position, there is absolutely no questioning that is pride and passion and drive for making Carolina basketball great. Bill Belichick, on the other hand, could not care less about UNC, and in fact probably thinks we are suckers and losers and easy marks for hiring him and paying him ungodly amount amounts of money and allowing him to hire his failsons and his GM buddy and his buddies failson for other millions. I’ve seen nothing to indicate that Bill Belichick has any passion for anything or anyone other than himself, and I’ve seen nothing to indicate that he has anything less than contempt for everyone else who he deems dumber than him when it comes to football- which in his mind is literally everyone. That’s why I got such a massive kick out of Dabo purposefully doing the football play calling version of flipping the double middle finger yesterday on the first play from scrimmage. That play call was not installed in practice this past week, let’s just say that.

It really says it all about where our football program is right now (and has been for several years) that Dave Doeren - who in a dozen years as State's head coach has never taken them above mediocrity and irrelevancy within the ACC, much less nationally - has pretty much owned UNC football for the past several years. And if the beginning of this season is any indicator he will continue to own it under Belichick. I hate State as much as anybody and think that Doeren is an assclown joke, but there's simply no getting around the fact that he's had our number for a good many years now, and will likely continue to do so under Belichick.

Hopefully they both turn it around. I think they both care about winning and want to win.
I won’t say that I don’t think that Bill cares about winning, but everything that he has shown us so far would lead one to believe that he no longer cares about doing the things that made him so prolific at winning earlier in his career. And that is the biggest problem I have with this whole thing. We are paying $10 million a year because we thought that we were getting that version of Bill Belichick, and we are getting the Bad News Bears version.

Yeah, Doeren has been prepping for the UNC game on November 29 since about December 14, 2024, or whatever the day was when we hired Belichick.

Maybe it's because I care more about basketball than football, but seeing Duke make UNC look like a high school team last year in basketball, in year four of HD, was far more disheartening than the shit-show yesterday. Especially after the disaster of year two, and scrapping to get into the tournament two of the other three years. Couple that with him all but refusing to modernize their approach to the game (using analysts, being forced into working with a GM, and so on), seemingly not knowing how to put his players in position to enhance their abilities, defenses, etc., I have very little faith in that staff.

Caring and wanting to win are two things, being able to do what is needed to win is far more important.

One staff is under qualified with a guy who has never been an HC and is underperforming/mediocre.

One is led by allegedly the greatest coach in the sport’s history and sucks.

Basketball got a huge head start but football has already lapped them on the race to the bottom.

I'm sure someone already responded to this but this is not true. Well, it's true that our offense sucks. It is not true that our defense did not play bad. Our defense was atrocious. Clemson was on pace for 1000 yards and 112 points after the 1st Q. The only reason it wasn't worse was that Clemson stopped trying after that.
Well, yeah, the defense was bad on the first two drives in particular, but it got better I thought. It doesn't matter. I don't really know what I'm talking about.

I was part of that 2011 UNC team that had an interim staff that was completely checked out in every way possible from the moment Butch was fired on July 27, 2011, and not only would that lameduck staff coach circles around this current one in their sleep, they also showed infinite more care for and investment in the players as people than this one ever will.
Explain things to me like I know nothing. When you say, the lameduck staff would coach circles around this one, what do you mean? Is it about reaching the players, i.e. getting buy-in? Play or scheme design? I just don't understand what the staff could be doing that is so bad. I mean, I see the results. How does what happens with the staff translate to what we see on the field?

Or, to use a slightly different example that was brought up earlier: UCLA fired its head coach and then proceeded to drop 45 on some team. How does that happen? What could their new staff possibly do in a week to make such a difference (if it wasn't just coincidence)? Players playing harder? I mean, if they had Peyton Manning sitting on the bench and they switched QBs, I get it but that seems extreme.

It's just hard for me to wrap my head around the staff's failings because I don't know what they would be doing differently or the same or what.

Any UNC Football fan who isn’t also a Panthers fan, you’re really missing out on the backend of a potent one-two punch.

Oh yeah, don't get me wrong at all, I am not happy with the current men's basketball staff, either. Outside of about 3 weeks in March 2022, and then the singular 2023-2024 season where we won the ACC reg. season and were a 1 seed in the tournament, they've performed far below any reasonable expectation for Carolina basketball. In fact, my biggest gripe with them is the same one so many others have: that we have a staff full of yes-men who likely wouldn't get similar jobs at any other P4 program and only have their jobs here because they are alums. That drives me nuts. And if they don't win and win big this year, it's time to pull the plug. Nothing less than an ACC contending, top 1-4 national seed type season should be met with walking papers, IMO.

The UNC/Lions combo also delivered in this regard for a long time.
UNC/Patriots fandom has been a pretty good hedge historically. Usually one or the other is good, but they are rarely both bad or good at the same time.

Last year was a bit trying. This year could go either way for the Pats.

Great question. The 2011 coaching staff essentially lost their jobs on July 27, 2011 when Butch Davis was fired, a week before training camp started, but of course they had to continue coaching the entire season while knowing that no matter what they did on the field, they weren't going to get to stay at Carolina. Even knowing all of that, I remember that they were coaching and teaching just as hard throughout training camp, and in practices and games during the season, as they had before Butch was axed. They still took the mentoring part of their jobs seriously. They still cared about the players and made sure to remain accessible.

This current staff, on the other hand, I've heard it directly from people who work within the UNC athletics department- and it's even been corroborated by parents of current players on IC- that there is virtually zero contact or connection between the players and coaches outside of the practice field and game day. When I was in the program, the fourth floor of the Kenan Football Center (which is where all of the coaches' offices reside) was completely open to players at any time they wanted to go up to talk with the coaches. I've heard that to go to the fourth floor now might as well be like trying to go into a SCIF and that there is none of the mentorship/chatting about life/investing in relationships with the players on the part of the current staff.
