They beat Minnesota by two TDs who just beat top 25 Nebraska and is 5-2. Cal’s two losses are to 5-1 SDSU and 4-2 Duke.

So Cal is not terrible. They are about UCF level.
thats some wishful thinking right there. that was two bad cfb teams on the field last night very painful football to watch.

Came down with an upper respiratory virus yesterday evening and went to bed around 9 so mercifully didn’t watch a bit of the game. Woke up around 3 AM and couldn’t go back to sleep so started reading about it. Sounds like it was two bad football teams who played a bad football game. Gotta give a lot of credit to the UNC guys though for not quitting on the season when it would be easy to do so. I’ll certainly give the coaching staff props for that, at least. Also sounds like a couple of individual performances were noteworthy so credit to those guys as well. Overall, though, it doesn’t sound like the game would have done much to dissuade from our positions those of us who believe this coaching staff is not cut out for building this program. Sounds like we still don’t do fundamentals and basic game management stuff well at all.

On to Virginia.

Looking at the remaining schedule our best opportunity to win another game is @ home vs. Stanford.

Best case scenario is upsetting another team and finish 4-8

The offensive line looked the best it had looked all year (save Richmond). That may have something to do with Cal’s poor D-line.

That made the offense look more competent because our run game improved to average.
I feel like there were fewer WTF calls despite many 2 & long and 3rd & longs...

Baby steps, definitely, but they showed improvement in many areas. They need to keep building on that, and hopefully develop a decent amount of traction. It's crazy how much a good qb can change the outlook of a team, and I wonder what this team would be with one.

Something that is not getting a lot of attention, which I think it should, is the kids got here Thursday, played a game last night which didn't start until around 11 pm for them and didn't finish until around 2:15 am for them. That has to be very difficult.

It hasn't hurt the BIG schools so it isnt too much of an obstacle when managed well.

Not sure how you measure how much it has "hurt" a school. I'm pretty confident that any school would play better if they're playing during a time that is roughly the same as they're used to playing in - for eg, a noon or early afternoon game on the west coast for a team coming from the east coast, or an afternoon or night game for a team coming from the west coast to the east coast. You hear about it a lot during the NCAA tournament, but not much in football. I'm curious the win/loss record for favored teams playing 3+ hours outside of a typical time.

But yes, kudos to the staff (everyone involved) because they did appear to have managed it well.

Just finished watching the game on replay. Thought Tyler Thompson, Ben Hall, and Kobe Paysour individually played well. Thought the team at least looked like they wanted to be there. Thought everything else was...not great, as usual. This coaching staff is doing the team a major disservice with the game planning and play calling. I don't know why in the world we have a supposed dual-threat quarterback for whom we refuse to call runs. Also don't understand why in the world we think that we are going to win any games throwing screens all game long. Cal had some awful drops and penalties and it's disappointing that we couldn't take advantage- they are not a good team outside of the quarterback.

Bummer to have not win a game that was there for the taking. Going to be hard to find wins the rest of the way. Hopefully we can get Stanford and/or Wake. I'd say Virginia might overlook us but Lombardi apparently told Chandler Morris he sucks back in the offseason so I'm sure he'll go for 400.

Yes, I don’t understand some of the play calling. I will say that early-ish in the game Gio got up looking a little gimpy and was looking a little gimpy on the sideline at various points of the game afterwards. Perhaps he/they didn’t feel comfortable having him running around, who knows. I was pleased to see the running game working, until Cal started playing against the run. Definitely was a gut punch fumbling into the end zone, but it’s clear there’s progress occurring. Hopefully it continues.

Yes, Cal receivers dropped some passes, but don’t sleep on JKS. He made some great throws last night. Overall, UNC’s defense definitely did enough to get the win, and looked good for many plays last night.

Baby steps…
