I am quite confident the NY Times/Athletic is not just making up facts. These stories are sourced.

When there is a "denial" after the fact, it is often the denial that is more likely to be fabricated and/or true through hypertechnicalities.

You seem to have no reporter's skepticism about the denials and extreme skepticism about the sourced reporting. I think you should reverse those biases.
The story about BB talking buyout was clearly made up. In this instance BB and Morris said the story, which is unsourced, is not true but you believe the unsourced person and not the two principals. BTW the buyout story is still being repeated on social media.

I don’t have an Athletic subscription anymore so someone correct me if I’m wrong on the details, but wasn’t the gist of the Chandler Morris story that he was allegedly interested in UNC but Lombardi declared that he wasn’t an NFL QB and that’s why they decided not to pursue him in the transfer portal? If so, I don’t think this is a situation where they’ve been caught red-handed making stuff up just to make UNC look bad.

Morris indicates he’s interested in UNC>agent tries to back channel>Lombardi/Belichick say no>never any contact beyond that. This is probably what happened and nothing that was said today denies any of that lol.

This story is a nothing burger anyway. Morris is having a great season and in hindsight would be way better than what we have, but it’s not like he was some surefire transfer portal prospect that we should have been all over.

You've got the gist correct and I don't remember the exact details.

I don't think that it alone is a terrible thing, but when we seem to have no good QB options it is certainly a story that we turned down someone who is having a great season at a school nearby.

This story was repeated to me by several friends who thought that it was a big deal, and I did too if in fact Lombardi would have said such a thing. It was used repeatedly as an indictment of BB.

Also, he may not be having such a great season if he ended up here under this coaching staff.

Has it been proven that Lombardi didn’t say that about Morris?

Well according to BB, no talks with Morris. Morris said he had no conversations with UNC. BB said he spoke with Morris agent after story came and he knew nothing. That is according to IC thread by Ben.
So both Morris and Belichick are denying that they talked. That’s all well and good and I’ll take them at their word.

That still doesn’t mean that Morris wasn’t interested in UNC, or that his agent didn’t put out feelers to UNC that didn’t involve direct contact with Morris, or that Lombardi didn’t describe him as not worth pursuing behind the scenes, which seems to be the takeaway that people had from the original piece.

E: and to reiterate again, I’m not slamming Lombardi for not being interested in Morris specifically. This is only a story because he’s having a much better season than anyone expected and they play UNC this week.

His agent told BB he had no knowledge of any of this. That is what BB said at press conference today.as reported by IC. If this happened I think BB had lots of options short of a complete denial that could be publicly disputed and extend this story. Believe as you be wish. Three principal figures, yes, one being paraphrased or an unnamed source. Easy choice for me.

What “story” was published about BB talking about buyout? To my knowledge, that appeared in a single tweet from Ollie Connelly.

Morris said he did not talk to UNC. That leaves open the possibility that: (1) UNC internally nixed going after him based on the published comment from Lombo, (2) UNC talked with his agent and not him.

Again, you take these “denials” as 100% gospel with no critical examination and you apply a microscope to every perceived inaccuracy in any negative reporting about the current regime. It is just odd.

The story was picked up from.local media. Cowherd had segment on it in which he said BB was talking buyout, had 4 day vacation in Nantucket and was checked out. I am interested in BB being judged on truth. The night all this BS started breaking based on what was being said, including Ollie, I would have fired him. Turns out staff is busy recruiting and trying to get team better. Not my definition of checked out. BB will coach UNC next year. Might as well hope he succeeds.

Again what story? There was a tweet from Ollie, not a story. If Cowherd runs with that, it wouldn't be the first or last time that Cowherd was spouting off about a tweet. Cowherd is not a journalist in any sense of the word.

BB may coach UNC. He may not. You don't know and I don't know either. No one would have predicted that James Franklin would be fired when the season started. And yet, here we are.

But whether BB is here next year or not is beside the point. You are doing yourself a disservice -- not to mention the board -- when you claim the NY Times is just making up facts out of thin air. I am 100% confident that the NY Times is not doing that (not that there have never been any bad apples at the Times, and not that the Athletic has a perfect track record -- see Bluedevilicious and concussions). I could see the Times making editorial leaps based on certain facts, but they are not just going to make up the underlying facts.

I am talking about local reporting and Ollie. Not NYT. Has NYT done any original reporting? Sent reporter to CH?. What NYT reporting am I disputing? The Morris story? I don't know if they reported it but if so it appears to be wrong. The three principals deny it. Morris agent and BB, according to post by Ben. Did NYT pick up from athletic? I warned about local agenda driven reporting that would be picked up by national media and repeated in a loop. That has happened.
Believe what you wish.

NYT owns The Athletic

Here is what I believe...rhe people at Carolina who are the life blood of our athletic department and loyal to a fault despise everything about the way our football program is being run.
