i don't think there's a football fan in the country that's satisfied with their team's offensive line.

UNC's has been absolutely fine this year. they had a really bad game against Clemson but otherwise, it's been Gio making them look bad by being one of the slowest quarterbacks in the country from snap to release. they're certainly nowhere near bad enough to be worried they'd mess with a young quarterback's development.

reminds me of the conversation around the patriots and Maye last year. their OL was, comparatively, much worse than this one, but he started 13 games behind it anyways and now he's an MVP candidate.
I do think they've played well in spots this year, but overall I don't think they've been all that good. I think the bad offense blame is shared all around.

I don’t even think it’s a question that Kitchens will be gone after this season. I just worry that instead of trying to find a proven college OC, Belichick will end up sticking with the theme and bring in a retread NFL play caller.

The problem now is we can't run ball. 106 yards total in two games. Not many QBs effective with that running game.
Don Callahan just posted story saying.unc expected to go big game hunting in portal for QB.

Funny enough, I just saw Andrew's article on the PFF grades this past week. Gio was the highest offensive player grading, second highest overall.
funny you should bring up PFF grades, because on the season, UNC ranks 53rd in the country in pass blocking grade. that's comparable to where they rank in run defense. it's by far the best-performing group we have on offense and is well out of the range at which it would be restricting either the quarterback or the OC's ability to run the offense.

I'm pretty sure one of the freshmen did play in the Richmond game - I believe they came in the game and immediately threw an interception
I think that’s right, I think it was Newkirk. Still, though, we’d be missing a golden opportunity these next two games to see what we’ve got with either/or between him and Baker. We’ve got nothing to lose and everything to gain IMO.

i would rather newkirk or baker throw 5 picks against duke than lopez throw 0.
Same here. Absolutely could not care less about the score of those games IF AND ONLY IF we are using it as a live tryout for either or both of the freshman quarterbacks. Short of us doing that – which I am highly skeptical we will do – I’m going to be pretty ticked if we get our tails kicked by mediocre Duke and State teams that are reeling.

The only thing I wonder is perhaps the freshman QB's have both looked awful in practice
The way Jason Staples put it last month (this was post Clemson I think) was in the spring Baker looked like he had all the tools but was doing obvious freshman stuff and he thought he could conceivably be ready by second half of the year. If he’s looking worse, that’s on the coaching. The fact we haven’t seen him at all and Newkirk for 1 play against Richmond is absurd given that this is a lost season with a bottom 5 power 4 offense.

I don't think you want to throw freshmen QBs into the starting role straight out of HS, unless they are NFL-level prospects, that rarely works out well and you may end up hurting their development.

I will say it's hard to compare Gio to other QBs because our offensive scheme seems really, really, really bad. We're very predictable and we don't seem to put our QBs in the best position to succeed. All around, the offense seems to be a huge cluster in a variety of ways.
I’m not a football savant or anything, but i watch our offense and don’t really know what the scheme or point is. Sometimes we’ll be in power I, sometimes we’ll be spread out and run a RPO. Juts seems like we have a group of plays but no real cohesive offense- not surprising given who our OC and head coach are (i mean this is a guy who put matt patricia in charge of an offense with a young Qb)

I’m a little confused by this- I thought we were going with an extremely large rebuild with a 40 man freshman class. Was thinking maybe we’d focus on development and building up with that class, but bringing in a QB (and i assume OC) would indicate we’d also be bringing in a large transfer portal class to compete now. Seems like more throwing shit against the wall

He was talking about QB specifically. BB and Lambo have said they want to build a foundation through recruiting and plug holes - my words - through portal. So my assumption is they believe they need to plug some holes with portal. I think we are ok on DL, WR ( with some stud freshmen coming in) and Rb but help needed in oLine, lb, db through portal. I actually like the philosophy but it will take some time.

@heel79, your friends at WRAL are keeping up their efforts to report on UNC football.

Our detailed analysis of court records shows that nearly 20 percent of UNC's 101-player roster has been cited for speeding since last October. This translates to 31 speeding charges and 10 reckless driving counts, with a significant portion attributed to athletes recruited under coach Bill Belichick.
Not such a good look I wonder if they are still racing...like the incident last spring or whenever it was

Yeah. The whole plan that Lombardi laid out in that dumb letter to the fanbase last month is a pretty clear indicator that they don’t really have an actual plan to be legitimately competitive anytime soon. Essentially, they were hired under the notion that they were going to come in right away with their big NFL brains and have a decided personnel evaluation, schematic, and game planning advantage over all of the rube college coaches, and thus be ready to win right away. But now apparently their plan is to have a 3-4 year runway- which is absolutely not what our fan base was told would be the case last December.

Our plan to bring in 40+ HS recruits and, presumably, 15-20 transfer portal players means that we are going to be in the exact same spot we were in this season, in that we are going to go into next season with a completely new team, no roster continuity, and no chemistry. We are going to have to jettison a large number of the players that are currently on this roster, which essentially means that we wasted an entire year of development of a lot of players. We’re going to be reliant upon the same exact person who failed so spectacularly in his roster construction this year (he’ll get it right this time, trust him! Just you wait and see!) to somehow magically have figured out how to evaluate and build an all new roster next season. We are going to be facing a schedule that is several orders of magnitude more difficult than this year’s schedule. We are going to have to hope that we hit some absolute grand slams in the portal AND an atypical number of our new HS recruits are capable of playing and contributing quickly. In other words, we’re pinning our hopes on the football equivalent of a straight flush. Great strategy!

Maybe we are a lot closer to becoming Georgia Football than I thought!

Also, holy shit at that NCSU player doing 120 on 540.
