We’d almost certainly be better than whatever the hell we currently are if that were the case! Or at least couldn’t be much worse.
I thought during halftime that Carolina Football would probably be better off if I were the head coach.

Not because I really know anything about football, but because I'd work for a whole lot less than Belichick and we could put the savings on his salary to hiring the absolutely best coordinators and staff and let them just run things.

I still disagree with this. Older Lombardi has the high school recruiting going really well, better than it has for a long time. Let's see what he can do with the portal. If it goes pear shaped, then I agree.
I don't think our HS recruiting is really going that well above average.

While the top of the class is very, very good, we have a much larger class than average and so we're not really doing that well from a ratio percentage. If you adjust our class ranking for our class size, it's not really that much beyond our historical average for a coach that's not on the hot seat.

You’re preaching to the choir my man haha. The likelihood that Lombardi suddenly figures out how to put together a roster that is significantly better than the current iteration in one offseason and that Belichick also makes the schematic changes necessary to put together a 9ish win type of season against that schedule is extremely low in my view.
The only good news I see is that if we can replace Kitchens at OC with someone who can do better with the offensive play-calling plus add an even barely above average QB through the portal, I do think that we could see major strides from the offense to at least mediocre.

For the most part, I think Steve Belichick is a pretty good DC and so we could be fairly decent to good there.

I think that a 9-win season would be hard, but maybe 7-8 is doable if everything goes well?

Also, does anyone expect a UNC freshman class to kick ass in football?

Especially when we need O-Line and D-Line and linebackers?

ESPN has them at 14th currently, and their "expert" seems to think it's a good class. Let's says thought that it's slightly above average ratio percentage, given the shit-show this year has been, I'd still say that Lombardi is not the major problem that some are saying he is. In fact, I'd say, even if what you're saying is true, he's doing is job better than most/everyone? else on this staff.

If we acknowledge that you are not high on this staff, will you stop with your constant bitching and moaning? If so, I understand and acknowledge that you are not high on this staff.

Exactly. This is the type of recruiting class that could be a solid building block that produces a lot of contributors in 2 or 3 seasons. If you do a look back of the last 20ish years or so to when they really started putting effort into these rankings, this class is roughly at the level that our previous coaches also got to when they had momentum. Hell, Mack even put together a string of 3 classes ranked higher than this current one.

Point being, I will give the staff credit for doing a good job with HS recruiting, but they are essentially just meeting expectations on that front. If that’s really the only thing they have going for them then it’s just not enough to outweigh all of the negatives.

I agree that 7-8 wins feels like best case scenario. Based on what Tommy was saying this week though I really don’t know if that would be enough to save Belichick’s job.

I get your point. And that highlights my point, of all the folks underperforming on this staff, Lombardi is at the end of the list.

Looking at 247 rankings, Mack's recruiting was 89.15 (high team was 93.08), 91.04 (high team was 95.07), 91.76 (95.00), 88.16 (94.79), 87.84 (93.37), 85.95 (93.63). Lombardi's first year is currently 88.61 (91.64). The differential is closer this year, so far. Given the shit-show we're seeing, that's pretty good, right?

Plus, bringing a good class would leave the cupboard somewhat full(er) for the next coach coming in.

That might be the saddest summary of this season that I can imagine reading.
This team could use the extra bowl practices. Could also see some of the younger players in the game, as player like Shipp should be with their new team by then.

But it doesn't matter. I see no way UNC beats State this year and there definitely is no 4-8 bowl opportunity.

I was there. Crowd was ok. Not great. But into the game. We had half dozen plays to win. Cost almost got that int late. The ball batted up in air but we can't get under it. Dook held all game git called once. Just could not get a break. Compare that to state last night. Amazing. Some very interesting comments by shipp after the game.

First, Lombardi is screwing up by going so heavy on HS recruits when we need impact transfers and to retain some players for continuity.

Second, we’re throwing a lot of scholarships at 3-star players who are not likely to be significant contributors for years, if ever.

But if this turns out to be a great HS class, that would likely put him above the mid-point on this staff because the bar is in hell for this staff’s performance, on the whole.

How many D1 P4 freshmen classes kick ass in college football?

Especially in the trenches?

And, the Delta between P2 (SEC and Big 10) and P3 (Big 12) and P4 (ACC) is huge.

When Bill Belichick’s grafting and grifting and nepotistic staff shows it is here to build a football program, I’ll give credit where credit is due.

4-7 results for $10 million in salary plus millions to his buddies and family for shitty results? Fuck that shit.

The Ray-Uffs! The Ray-Uffs!

C’mon, Donnie! We’re NOT ncsulol fans.

d00k won.

I hate typing those words.

I appreciate Tommy’s reporting, but I’m guessing it will because it keeps people from having to admit how badly we screwed up.

Now, if we miss a bowl again next year, that might force a change.
