I get your point. And that highlights my point, of all the folks underperforming on this staff, Lombardi is at the end of the list.

Looking at 247 rankings, Mack's recruiting was 89.15 (high team was 93.08), 91.04 (high team was 95.07), 91.76 (95.00), 88.16 (94.79), 87.84 (93.37), 85.95 (93.63). Lombardi's first year is currently 88.61 (91.64). The differential is closer this year, so far. Given the shit-show we're seeing, that's pretty good, right?

Plus, bringing a good class would leave the cupboard somewhat full(er) for the next coach coming in.

Well we can’t discount that Lombardi was also the architect of the current abysmal roster. It’s been well documented that his strategy for the portal this past off-season was all over the place, to put it kindly.

That’s very concerning because although it’s important to have strong HS recruiting, very few of those players are going to be ready to make a meaningful impact in year 1, which means we’re probably still going to have to hit the portal hard again. Do we really trust that Lombardi will have figured out how to nail that process this time around?

But it doesn't matter. I see no way UNC beats State this year and there definitely is no 4-8 bowl opportunity.

The extremely irritating thing is, this whole Belichick thing could have worked if we had hired the vintage Bill Belichick, not whatever this clown car bad news bears version of Bill Belichick is. It’s not just that the players evaluation/roster construction sucks, or that the nepotism that led to such a poor staff sucks, or that the game planning and scheming sucks. It’s that all of that sucks AND the game management, discipline, “don’t beat yourself” that was a hallmark staple of vintage Belichick is absolutely nowhere to be found anymore. The guy we hired and are paying $10 million a year is way, way closer to John Bunting than he is to vintage Bill Belichick. The version we’ve got is getting completely pantsed by the likes of Scott Frost, Justin Wilcox, Tony Elliott, Jake Dickert, and Manny Diaz.

I said after bball season we would spend to get Hubert a good roster and we will see what he does with it. I predict same with football. The defense will be fine. We need an impact QB and some playmakers. I think we get them..as for the HS class I expect good news this week. We need to keep this class together. Lot of talent in it.

First, Lombardi is screwing up by going so heavy on HS recruits when we need impact transfers and to retain some players for continuity.

Second, we’re throwing a lot of scholarships at 3-star players who are not likely to be significant contributors for years, if ever.

But if this turns out to be a great HS class, that would likely put him above the mid-point on this staff because the bar is in hell for this staff’s performance, on the whole.

I'm hoping that they hit the portal hard too. There's not much talent on this current squad.

That's part of why I think going in so hard on the HS class is such a poor idea for this coaching staff. There is almost no way this HS class makes a substantial impact on the field in 2026. We'd be very, very fortunate if they make such an impact in 2027.

But this is a coaching staff led by a 73 year old HC whom we're paying $10mil per year with only 3 guaranteed years on his contract. This was never meant to be a rebuilding project and was meant to be a "skip 5 steps in rebuilding to be good now" plan. If we're going this hard on HS recruits that won't produce real results for a couple of years, we have go wonder if this staff will even be here when these players are ready to lead the team? And if this staff won't be here when these players are ready, then what's the chances they'll stick around under a new staff to do great things here?

It's like a 70 year old guy taking out a 30-year mortgage to buy a dream home, it might seem fun for the old man, but no one else is likely to make out well from the deal.

Well said. I’m certain that the people that signed off on this hire did so with the expectation that Belichick would hit the ground running in year 1 and would be a serious contender in the ACC by years 2 and 3.

They absolutely were not planning on a wasted first season where the staff essentially learns on the job while getting crushed on the field followed by a few seasons of incremental progress before Belichick enters his late 70s and retires while handing over a few good recruiting class to the next coach without ever actually winning anything meaningful.

I guess I never thought, nor think, BB will be here in 3 more years - if next year sucks then he'll leave/be fired, and if he starts winning a lot then he'll leave for a better spot (if he wants to continue coaching). My hope is that he gets the ship righted from what Mack left us and we bring in a great, long-term coach. We've shown that we're willing to spend enough to get a great staff in place, along with talented players. That is what I want.

Regarding talent retention by the next staff, that is always going to have to be addressed. The next staff will have to keep the talented players, while letting those who don't fit their program's vision to leave, bringing in players that do fit their vision. I think have more talent on the roster, with eligibility left, makes it easier for the incoming staff to retain more talent.
