It's not just semantics. But, in your defense, a lot of people conflate rev share and NIL payments.

They cant but thats precisely why the clearinghouse exists...to nullify the rev share cap. It was created and is facilitated specifically so schools can pay whatever they like.

Why is it that you see some functional difference when there is almost no actual name, image, and likeness work being performed by any player receiving money from the clearinghouse?

Okay then. You should see why it's not simply semantics. Those two processes are different. And that is precisely why I can call the Rams Club tomorrow and they'll still take my money, even though UNC is maxing out its direct pay to athletes - it will go through the clearinghouse process, not being considered rev shares.
 
The clearinghouse is a joke. Lots of schools have found ways around it -- someway, somehow.

I don’t want to say something is rotten in Denmark, but something isn’t adding up on NIL compliance. As outlined in the House v NCAA settlement, every third-party NIL deal over $ 600 is required to be submitted to the College Sports Commission for approval. However, the total value of deals submitted via the NIL Go portal appears to be only a fraction of what is reportedly being paid for NIL. This raises the issue of potentially significant non-compliance with NIL reporting requirements. Additionally, there is some opposition from at least a few schools to the CSC participation agreement as currently drafted.
The latest update from the College Sports Commission reports only $ 87.5 million of cleared deals as of 11/1/2025, this is a fraction of the estimated $ 500 million third-party NIL market just for basketball alone.

As I said, I don't think UNC would cheat. I'm sure others are though, as your article alludes to.

There is somewhere around 1-2 billion in NIL. $87 million has been cleared by the clearinghouse. Where is the rest of it?

You think Bill Belichick -- of Spygate and Deflategate fame -- wouldn't "cheat"?

At the end of the day, UNC football has X amount of money to spend on coaches and players. That money comes from both the school and boosters. How a school chooses to allocate that X between players and coaches is what I care about. I don't really care about the clearinghouse, or rev share or whatever other bucket is used to get to X. At the end of the day, X is the budget and the program needs to decide how to allocate X to maximize winning.

My theory is that a larger chunk should be spent on players. There really aren't that many coaches that move the needle to be worth the cost.

There is genuine excitement among a lot of my UNC friends that we will have legendary coaches on defense and offense next year and a really good freshman class on which to build. Then I come here and it's like taking a downer. Look ahead not backward. Might not work but if I had said two years ago BB was our coach and petrino or Kelly our OC I'm guessing most would have said fuck yea
