I'm not defending the staff -- I leave that to @heel79. I'm just pointing out that the staff saw Baker in practice every day and decided they wanted someone else.

Very hard at this point in the process to judge quality of portal pickup by HS rankings, prior program, or prior stats/starts.

After all, one of the very best portal players last year was Div. II Trinidad Chambliss. I doubt on the Ole Miss ZZL-P, anyone was cheering when Ole Miss signed him or thought he was anything other than practice fodder.

And arguably our best transfer was Melkart Abou-Jaoude from Delaware.
 
Yeah. No way we are planning on starting two true frosh LB's and a true frosh NT. I'd buy that a freshman WR or CB could start.
 
Just got WR from Wisconsin.

51 catches two years. But no TDs this year. 14 rushes for 129 yds 1 TD. Obviously following Edwards.

Definitely not the portal strategy people were expecting to see - we seem to be bargain shopping more than finding clear starter-level players. Hopefully some big OL and LB to come; we need them.

If their evaluations are great, and no one gets hurt, and we get about 5 more starters in the portal over the next ~week (classes start Wednesday) and some freshman surprise with how ready they are to compete, we could go 6-6. Yay

Unlike last year, they’ve had a full year to scout and prepare/tamper. So if our “NFL scouting department “ is worth a damn, that should make a difference. It will be interesting to see how that turns out.
