Texas A&M GM Derek Miller and director of player personnel Allen Gaudet IV helped land Mims at ECU back in 2021... as ever, relationships and connections matter when it comes to the portal. We better hope Lance Thompson, Petrino and some of the few other college-experienced guys have some tricks up their sleeves.

Petrino does have tricks up his sleeve. Unfortunately, they mostly involve a motorcycle.

Wondering why 79 avoided my question about expected wins next season? I think understanding his view on how successful the team will be next season might shine a light on why his take on the state of the program might be an anomaly from the majority of other posters here.

Gun to your head -- what's our most likely record next year? No caveats or half measures. Of course there are lots we don't know but do your best to guess. Would be interested to know your true estimation.
Just saw this. I got no idea. I do not know what this team will look like, not that familiar with the opponents, etc. But I also am not going to establish a goalpost of win. Baltimore just fired its coach because kicker missed a FG. I will say again, we were three plays from 7-5, with wins over the two teams that played in ACC title game. Also could have been 2-10.

I am looking for program building through recruiting, coaching, fundraising, player development, coaching, etc. Some boxes are being checked, some not so much. I think any coach should be given the opportunity to recruit his own players and see what he can do with them. One of the things I like is that we seem to be getting a good percentage of portal targets. Chad Simmons had an upbeat story on 2027 kids who were on campus this weekend and their thoughts. They almost all talk about program building. I understand I bring a more positive view, but I have yet to say this will work. I do not know if it will. The example of my Polly-Annishness is that I said an Arkansas guy played some for Petrino, and supposedly I was trying to trick people into thinking he was a starter? Really? Maybe his snaps were limited because he is not good. Or maybe they were limited because Arkansas wanted to redshirt him. I don't know.

I just do not think firing the coach, especially in year 2, is always the answer. This crowd and the Hubert haters would have fired Dean Smith. They just would have.

I’ll give you UVA as one play away, but beating Duke was no guarantee even if fake FG were unsuccessful and beating Cal was no guarantee even if we don’t fumble at the goal line. Both of those games would have required defensive stands to preserve the win.

Duke Kalbe Cost dropped an INT with about a minute left. It would have been a touch catch, but it was in his hands. We also swatted a pass straight up in the air on their last drive and it came down right in their guys hands, not ours. My point though, is if we win all three, and are 7-5, the things that concern the anti-BB crowd, and me, are still there. There was much I didn't like. But the recruits, portal guys, and a lot of the players who re-signed seem to believe in what is going on.

But we weren’t “three” plays away as you keep saying. We had a lot of work in both of those games. You could also say we were one play away from losing Stanford.

I did say that. Said we could have been 2-10. Also said 7-5 would have been nice but some issues that concern people still exist. But it's why I am looking at way more than wins next season. If social media had existed in 1966 dean would have not survived IMO

At the risk of being accused of being negative, after reading Don’s latest transfer portal scoop, I think it’s safe to say that this transfer portal season arguably was even worse for us than last year. I think the argument can be made that the overall roster either did not improve, or somehow got even worse than last year- not only does it appear they we did not land any instant-impact type difference makers, we also lost three of our key DL (two of them at the very last minute) without a clear plan to replace the lost players. The fact that you can’t say whether the roster has improved is not good. There are more position groups that are now worse than were improved in the portal. I’d say we clearly got better at TE, we *maybe* got a little better at WR, and maybe you can even be charitable and say that we got a little bit better at QB since the guy we brought in to start at least had previous starting experience at the P4 level (even if his stats and ratings in his last full year of starting were very similar to what Gio Lopez produced for us last year). The DL got worse with the departures, LB got worse or at least didn’t get appreciably better, DBs didn’t get appreciably better, OL didn’t get better, etc.

I continue to be incredulous that there has been some supposed massive financial investment in the football program, yet we are recruiting the portal like a G5 team, adding almost exclusively players from big name schools with previous recruiting stars beside their name but no extensive history of production at the collegiate level and/or a history of injury.

Somewhere I saw a list of an avg "rating" of those we lost versus those we gained in the portal
The gained number was slightly lower

OL in particular...at present I think we will have less than 10 P4 starts last season in aggregate across the entire line

ETA: Happy to be shown wrong. I'm just doing some back of envelope math here.

Is this our projected OL as of now?
LT - Hall; played in 5 games last season
LG - Banfield; started 4 games last season before injury
C - Kelly?; played in 2 games last season
RG - Threatt?; transfer from Charleston Southern
RT - McRoy; started 1 game last season and played in 6 total for Arkansas

Michael Lombardi getting paid 2x the salary of the next highest paid college GMs to put together this type of roster is an all time grift haha. I would do anything to give the big time boosters truth serum for their unfiltered take on how this whole thing has played out.

There are plenty of GMs making more than. $750,000. That doesn't mean Lombo is not overpaid etc. But your assertion is wrong. Unless I misread it. Jason staples is doing critiques on portal players. Also good story on on3 about Billy Edwards.

Ah yeah my bad, look like he’s only making ~1.5x as much as the other top GMs. What a relief. That makes it feel so much better, thanks for correcting me.
