It was more than floor and poor competition - he looked like a different player vs duke. I don't think we changed the scheme. Our OL suddenly didn't become decent. Something changed in Gio's physical health or mentality OR one of the coaches got him thru a funk.

I certainly do hope for all of that. Nothing would thrill me more than for it to turn out that I am completely wrong about how this Belichick experiment is going to go for UNC Football. There is no evidence to me that any of that will occur, though, so that’s what I’m basing my statement on. We did upgrade our offensive coordinator but that is about the only place we significantly upgraded this off-season. That’s not good.

Let us hope. I think it's more likely that the OC being an upgrade is more relevant than the QB being an upgrade. I don't see Billy Edwards or whoever the other dude is we got from Texas A&M being that much more significantly talented or capable athletically than Gio Lopez, so let's hope that the major upgrade we got at the OC position carries us.

I wish Taron Dickens was around for spring practice - he seemingly has some potential but will come in pretty behind everyone else.

They both are. I think you are giving Gio too much a benefit of the doubt. Even though the scheme did him no favors, he was not a G4 level QB - plus he was injured. Jason was negative on Gio before he got here and has been fairly high on Miles and Edwards.

I would personally go door to door helping Belichick campaign for his buddy Rubio if he manages to win a playoff game or an ACC championship at UNC in the next few years.

Speaking of low bar, there is nowhere but up, we're inexperienced, but probably better in other facets.

-we were starting a true frosh LT
-our orig starting Center was out the first few games, the successive starter was lost for the season vs Cuse.
-the backup Center was so hurt he could only play a few snaps after starting the first game and never returned.
-3rd string center had only been playing the position for fall camp
-our starting RT wasn't even here for spring
-our starting RG wasn't even here for spring
-our season-ending LT wasn't even here for spring
-our season-ending LG wasn't even here for spring
-Banfield was clearly banged up and didn't play much.

FOUR of the starters in the last four games weren't here for spring.

From an experienced-snaps perspective we're stepping backwards -
From a size perspective, we're probably "even" since O'Steen was so small =
From a conditioning perspective we'll be better given everyone has been here all spring +
From a gelling perspective we'll be better since everyone is here all spring +
Strength/agility/athleticism/skill is TBD but Petrino is going to help put these guys into a position to succeed more than Freddie & co could +

And starting TE was also a summer-arrival guy.
"Nowhere to go but up" isn't a happy place, but I thinking the O will be much more productive.
 
And while i'm posting to myself, other guys who missed spring that were contributors on D:
-Every linebacker other than House. Gbayor, Simpson, Agumadu, Hickmon-Collins - all not here for spring
- Greg Smith in the secondary
- Smith Vilbert, Isaiah Johnson, Mupoyi, D'Antre Robinson, Xavier Lewis - 5 guys that were 2-deep or starting.

You don't know what you have until pads are on. Defense is easier to play than O, but the D coaches didn't know our front 7 personnel until mid-August.

It is baffling that Eidan Buchanan was trotted out at LT. Baffling that we didn't have a better returner than Will Hardy. Baffling that Freddie was the OC... on and on you can list headscratchers. But it makes sense that our "program" will be way more prepared for year 2.

Lucy FWIW, while I personally have always thought Belichick was a terrible idea, I do think there's a chance we will be significantly better this season due to hiring a real OC (Petrino) and Belichick and Lombardi pulling their heads ever so slightly out of their asses when it comes to figuring out the college football ecosystem a little better. But we were so bad last season, and our schedule was so easy, that we could be "significantly better" and still be completely irrelevant with a record similar to last year.
