Insane to think that it’s been more than two decades- 23 years, in fact- since we last beat Kansas in basketball. I was in middle school. We beat them in the Preseason NIT at the beginning of Doherty’s final season. Since then we’ve lost to them in 2008 (Final Four), 2012 (Elite 8), 2013 (Second Round), 2022 (Championship Game), and 2024 (reg. season).

I think we get it done Friday night in front of a great Smith Center crowd.

Heels 84, ‘Hawks 80
My wife and kids [then 8 and 11] and I were in NYC for Thanksgiving that year [2002] and went to the semifinal game against Kansas. In hindsight, it's pretty amazing that our post-season-NIT-bound team toppled NCAA-championship-game-bound KU that Wednesday night. It was pretty awesome...especially coming off 8-20. [And yes...I know...STILL too soon].

If Sean May doesn’t break his foot, that team was an NCAA tourney team.

It was certainly an upset, but not one as large as your description implies.

I think the shock was how we dismantled KU in that game. Sean May ate them alive distributing from the high post.

I didn't get to watch the game as I was visiting my in-laws and didn't have any real option to see it. I didn't know we'd won until I checked the score the next morning.

I do remember being super excited that we won and reading about it everywhere I could after I learned the score.

I just checked and it's on YouTube. I may have to watch it sometime soon.

My old boss was a huge college sports fan (former Stanford deep snapper) and his younger brother was Scott Frost, the former Nebraska QB, NY Jets 5th DB, Special Teams freak, Central Florida Head Coach (success), Nebraska Head Coach (failure)…..

Anyway…..my old boss followed and knew college sports……

He called me as UNC was dogging KU……all he had to say was, “You have some athletes. You’re back.”

University of North Carolina senior captain Seth Trimble suffered a broken bone in his left forearm in a team workout on Sunday afternoon.

He will undergo surgery this week. The exact length of his absence from the lineup will be better known following the surgery.

"So sad for Seth," says head coach Hubert Davis. "He's such a great kid and teammate and has worked so hard for his senior year. He loves being a Tar Heel and we love him. The good news is he will be back at some point this year, and I know he will continue to be a great leader for us until he can get back in the lineup."

The only positive is that all but 3 of those games we should still win even without Seth. The Michigan State, UK, and Georgetown games will all be tough to win without him, but doable. Hopefully he won't be out any longer than that.
