Is this a catch -22 situation - we keep missing out on the elite talent because we haven't developed anyone recently who's an NBA star but then it's hard to develop someone to be an NBA star who wasn't an elite high school recruit

Cam is going to be in Denver this year, which is on TV all the time. HB is going to be on the Spurs, who are also on TV all the time. That should help to some degree.

We lost a recruit to OSU. When was the last NBA star they developed? D'Angelo Russell?

Just an fyi - Stanford got busted handing out an "easy class" list for athletes around the same time UNC was going through our mess. I don't think any of the power conference schools are treating their athletes like the regular students who got in on their own merit.
And Michigan.

At dook they get 3-year sociology degrees, meaning if our players didn’t lean on AFAM classes, they still would have taken more “legitimate” course hours than Jay Williams took to graduate from dook.

I use Jay as an example because he was asked once how he managed summer school while playing in junior national team, he said the class was one 5-page paper on “what I did in China that summer.”

The simplest explanation is that it’s going to be really difficult for Hubert—or any coach—to recruit at or near the maximum potential for the program when he’s obviously on the hot seat. If he has a 2024-esque season this year then it should pay off on the recruiting trail.

Harrison Barnes? That ship has sailed.

Coby White is actually the best hope these days.

You're probably right, but I'm honestly not sure how much a "hot seat" really matters in today's world where most high-profile recruits - whether HS or portal - are making their plans one year at a time.

Coby and Cam. Coby probably has a better chance to make an all-star team one day (though I don't think he is particularly likely to make one) but Cam is now in a much more high-profile situation that is much more conducive to making a deep playoff run.

Yeah, this is - in part - a repercussion of keeping a coach and giving him a “win or else” mandate. Very few kids want to commit to a program where they can’t be sure the coach will be there when they get to campus.

The biggest reason why HD is struggling to sign these projected 1-and-done kids is that, right or not, he's perceived as a guy that doesn't produce top NBA talent. It's not a money/NIL issue, UNC is spending it. It's not a winning issue, these kids care about it but care much more about their future in the league. To be honest, I think more would be willing to commit to UNC now if they knew there would be a new staff in place next year. They just don't trust that HD can help them fulfill their dreams like other coaches can.
