I'm curious about your idea here and don't inherently disagree with you.

For this season and next, what do you think the minimum achievements would be that HD would deem "successful" enough that he'd not step down after next season?

I've always thought that the base expectation for success was sweet 16s: get to the sweet 16s consistently and you'll be fine (you have to expect that one of those year you'll make it to the FF.

I suspect (I certainly hope) that the minimum would be making the tourney both years...but he'd be more comfortable there was progress with a S16 one of those years. Honestly...think that will be quite a challenge.

Thanks.

I think that I roughly agree with your standard of success. I'd say making the tourney every year as at least (an average of) a 6 seed and making (an average of) a S16 (run) each year would be the definition of minimum acceptable success. Of course, over time you'd understand there would be occasional down years where you might be a lower than 6 seed and not make the S16 balanced with being a 1 or 2 seed and making runs to the F4.

Thanks.

Guess how many programs have made the NCAAT 4+ years in row.

Extra credit if you can name them.

Don't really care.

The minimum expectation every year should be being a decently-seeded NCAAT team. Occasionally falling short can be accepted, but it should certainly be the case that it's seen as a significant failure.

Looks like it's indeed six. Went and saw the list...would have only gotten two right (and one because of a technicality) in Kansas and Michigan State. Two more make sense because of the recent success of those programs (Gonzaga, Baylor). Would have never hit the last two to be perfectly honest.

Only 2 blue bloods on that list. Gonzaga ain’t a blue blood but they have the 2nd longest, active streak (behind Mich State) with 24 consecutive appearances. I forgot Kansas had their streak derailed in 2018 due to some “issues”… but they still make the list of 4+ years in a row.

Purdue, Houston and Tennessee round out the list.

Interesting to note the big names missing - including some *blue bloods: d00k*, Kentucky*, UConn*, Nova, Michigan, UVa., Louisville, ‘Cuse… and of course UNC*

Just figure out I misread the wikipedia table, so it's more than six (think that's the number the have made it past first round four years in a row).

Looks like the count is 14.

I believe it was 6 before last season.
If you look at 5+ in a row 6 is the number.
Did 8 teams with 4 in a row make it last year?

I don’t know if I would consider vacated wins a derailment of the streak. The wins may not be there on paper, but I saw Kansas go to the Final Four in 2018.

Only because it’s inconsistent and hypocritical is it an issue but I’d think you wouldn’t want teams that were caught cheating to get credit for their accomplishments.

Credit or no credit, you can’t erase actual history and it doesn’t mean a certain accomplishment didn’t happen. But also keep in mind that these wins weren’t vacated due to Kansas cheating. The wins were vacated because Silvio De Sousa was subsequently ruled ineligible due to payments his guardian received from a Maryland booster to steer him to Maryland and due to $2,500 his guardian received to pay for De Sousa’s online high school courses.

In any event, Kansas’s streak was broken based on having the NCAAT appearance and wins vacated as the result of having a little-used player deemed ineligible due to payments he received unrelated to Kansas rather than based on having a subpar season.

It’s really not that important.

I don’t think there’s any debate that Kansas is one of the top 2 programs in recent history and top 5 all-time.

This is basically a tournament game for UNC. UNC is 46 in the net rankings, and it’s going to be hard to climb a lot in conference games. Especially given the odds are high that they will have a few bad losses (like all teams will do).

It’s crazy that this game, if a loss, will all but end their chances of dancing.
